Meter Technician

Position Summary

The Meter Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of all types of electric meters, associated metering equipment, and load control systems used throughout the Cooperative's system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Meter Service Orders and Testing

• Read single and polyphase meters for billing.

• Test and change out single and polyphase meters.

• Install and evaluate power quality monitors.

• Install and maintain surge protectors.

• Build and repair meter loops.

• Connect and disconnect 1 and 3-phase services.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

• Install and troubleshoot AMI equipment.

• Monitor, gather, and evaluate data on the performance of AMI equipment.

Demand Response

• Connect, disconnect, and check the functionality of Load Control Relays.

• Monitor, gather, and evaluate data for Demand Response Programs during June-September.

Other Related Duties

• Perform damage assessment and/or Birddog in an emergency or calamity.

• Recommend improvements that can be made in practices, methods, processes, and procedures within the area of this job responsibility.

• Will properly use and keep in good condition all tools and equipment.

• Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.

• Attend safety meetings.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Technical background in electronics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of metering practices.

• Knowledge of transmission lines, substations, and distribution line specifications and system operations.

• Knowledge of substation and major feeder locations.

• Skill in power equations and calculations, relaying and metering specifications and requirements.

• Skill and proficiency in the use of computers, copiers, calculators, and Microsoft Office Platforms (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

• Skill in verbal and written communication.

• Skill in time management, organization, and attention to detail.

• Skill in analytical and critical thinking for analyzing complex problems, evaluating options, and developing resolutions.

• Ability to use meter testing and electronic equipment.

• Ability to prioritize the completion of multiple, time-sensitive tasks, and meet deadlines.

• Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor.

• Ability to communicate in both oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.

• Ability to understand, interpret, and observe Craighead Electric policies, procedures, programs, and safety rules and regulations to effectively carry out job duties.
  

Special Requirements

• Must have a valid Driver's License.

• Will be subject to 24-hour call out.

• Must be able to work long shifts during emergencies and outage restoration events.

• Ability to obtain Forklift certification with six (6) months of employment.

Working Conditions and Mental or Physical Requirements

The following characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock; occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Work is performed outside and in all types of weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear; and frequently required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; continuously lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; and depth perception.
