The Manufacturing Designer/Draftsman plays a critical role in the design and fabrication of overhead crane and runway structures. This position is responsible for creating highly accurate production drawings that adhere to industry standards and facilitate efficient fabrication and installation. Expertise in SolidWorks and AutoCAD is essential, along with a strong understanding of drafting standards, AWS D1.1 welding symbols, GD&T, and structural detailing.
Success in this role requires precision, technical acumen, and the ability to effectively communicate engineering requirements to manufacturing teams, installation crews, and customers.
Position Roles & Responsibilities
- Develop precise multi-view fabrication and installation drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD with minimal supervision.
- Ensure compliance with drafting standards, including AWS D1.1 weld symbols, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and standard fabrication annotations.
- Create detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) to itemize all components required for manufacturing.
- Collaborate with engineers and project teams to integrate structural, electrical, and mechanical requirements into cohesive designs.
- Provide technical support to installation teams, customers, and internal departments, including troubleshooting field-related design issues.
- Develop clear, detailed technical specifications and procedural documentation for manufacturing and customer reference.
- Optimize designs for manufacturability, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness without compromising safety or structural integrity.
- Review and revise drawings based on feedback from engineering teams, shop personnel, and installation crews.
Skills and Experience
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (2D & 3D modeling) and AutoCAD is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in drafting, preferably in manufacturing, structural fabrication, or industrial equipment design.
- Strong knowledge of drafting standards, welding procedures (AWS D1.1), GD&T, and mechanical/structural detailing.
- Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with strength of materials, assembly processes, and lifting mechanics is preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Project).
- Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required.
