Library Specialist

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Principal, the Library Specialist provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning library environment in which teachers and students can take full advantage of available resources.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Presents library awareness programs and lessons on literature and library filing system.
  • Reads to small groups or classes of students.
  • Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to publishers, catalog cards and the like.
  • Selects, orders and receives books.
  • Maintains files of catalog cards, vertical file material, publishers' catalogs and the like.
  • Writes notices to homeroom teachers and parents concerning overdue books and collects fines for such books.
  • Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged books for repair.
  • Prepares current magazines for shelving and maintains the back-number stacks.
  • Performs the annual inventory of library materials and the preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded.
  • Shelves incoming books.
  • Maintains current inventory of supplies and AV equipment. Orders items for acquisition as needed and performs minor repair on machines.
  • Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  • Helps students locate reference materials and other instructional materials.
  • Assists teachers in selecting reading material related to curriculum.
  • Performs other related duties as required by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

  • Verified completion of 60 college credit hours or passing score on ParaPro assessment.
  • Two years previous experience in library management, school library experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated compassion and understanding for children.
  • Shall have the ability to work and communicate effectively with students, staff members and parents.

Knowledge of:
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases;


Skill in:

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proper English, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
  • Use of computers and technology, to include, but not limited to email, internet, Microsoft Office or equivalent software


LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


A valid State Driver’s License may be required.
