GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The VP of Sustainability is responsible for leading and driving the sustainability strategy and initiatives within the logistics company. This role focuses on integrating sustainable practices across operations, aligning business objectives with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, and ensuring long-term viability and reduced environmental impact, and will work closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to develop and implement innovative solutions in line with industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and sustainability trends.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Sustainability Strategy Development

  • Develop and execute the company's sustainability vision and strategy in line with the corporate goals and market trends.
  • Identify key sustainability initiatives, including reducing carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, and optimizing resource utilization.
  • Align sustainability goals with broader business strategies, ensuring measurable outcomes and long-term environmental stewardship.

Sustainability Reporting & Compliance

  • Oversee the company's sustainability reporting, ensuring accuracy and transparency in annual sustainability reports.
  • Ensure compliance with local, regional, and global sustainability regulations, including carbon emissions targets, waste management policies, and other environmental standards.
  • Manage relationships with regulators, industry groups, and sustainability rating agencies.

Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including customers, vendors, employees, and government bodies, to promote sustainability initiatives and achieve shared goals.
  • Develop partnerships with client organizations, suppliers and industry peers to drive collective action on sustainability challenges.
  • Advocate for sustainability policies both within and outside the organization, enhancing the company’s reputation as a sustainability leader.

Innovation & Sustainable Logistics Solutions

  • Promote the development and integration of innovative, eco-friendly technologies and practices in logistics operations, including green transportation solutions, sustainable packaging, and carbon-neutral facilities.
  • Work with IT and logistics teams to implement sustainable supply chain practices, including optimizing route planning and using renewable energy sources.
  • Encourage the use of alternative fuels, electric vehicles (EVs), and low-emission technologies in fleet management and directly manage Sustainable Aviation Fuels initiatives.

Performance Monitoring & Metrics

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for sustainability initiatives, tracking progress and providing regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Conduct environmental audits, lifecycle assessments, and sustainability impact evaluations to measure the effectiveness of implemented programs.
  • Use data analytics to identify new opportunities for improvement and drive continuous optimization of sustainability efforts.

Employee Engagement & Training

  • Foster a culture of sustainability across the organization through employee training, awareness programs, and incentives for sustainable practices.
  • Lead sustainability-focused employee engagement initiatives, creating a sense of shared responsibility and purpose.
  • Ensure sustainability is embedded in company values and day-to-day operations, from executive leadership to frontline workers.

Risk Management & Crisis Response

  • Identify and mitigate environmental and social risks, ensuring that the company anticipates and adapts to changing regulatory, climate, and market conditions.
  • Lead crisis management and response strategies in the event of environmental disruptions or sustainability-related reputational issues.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Track record of leading sustainability initiatives, driving innovation in green logistics, and working with cross-functional teams to achieve environmental goals.
  • In-depth knowledge of logistics operations, including fleet management, supply chain optimization, and carbon emissions reduction strategies.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of sustainability reporting standards (e.g., GRI, CDP, TCFD, etc.) and ESG metrics.
  • Familiarity with relevant sustainability technologies, such as telematics, route optimization software, and renewable energy solutions.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and sustainability performance tools.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence and inspire change across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex sustainability topics to a range of audiences (executive leadership, employees, customers, and stakeholders).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder relationships, including suppliers, customers, regulatory bodies, and non-governmental organizations.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business Administration, Logistics, or a related field is required. A master’s degree or MBA with a focus on Sustainability or Corporate Responsibility is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in sustainability, with at least 5 years in a senior management role within logistics, transportation, or supply chain industries.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSES

  • Sustainability certifications such as LEED, ISO 14001, or Carbon Trust are advantageous.
  • Knowledge of carbon accounting frameworks, such as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Job requires the ability to use vision, adjust focus and work on a standard computer screen
  • Job may require extended sitting or standing, use of standard office equipment, typing and using a mouse
  • Job will require punctual and regular attendance as well as presence on-site at the assigned work location
