Job Summary:

Cranemasters is a leading provider of specialized engineering and railroad services, with a focus on high tonnage cranes and machinery used in conjunction with cranes and transportation. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced engineer to join our team. The purpose of this role is to design and optimize cranes and other equipment and attachments specifically tailored for rail industry use. This involves understanding the unique requirements of railway construction, such as heavy lifts, track maintenance, and logistical challenges. The engineer collaborates with a team to create designs that ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards, considering factors like load capacity, stability, reliability and durability, ease of maintenance, and ease of maneuverability along railway tracks. Responsibilities include structural analysis, materials, components and systems selection, and ensuring the crane's efficiency and safety throughout the life span of the equipment.

Work Schedule:

Operating on a 9/80 work schedule, this position will primarily be based in Chesterfield, Virginia. When working in the Aftermarket Group, the position will typically require 80% of the workweek to be at our Richmond location, with a dedicated day each week (20%) spent at Chesterfield headquarters. As a first responder to the railroad industry, all employees of Cranemasters are considered on call and available for emergency support and Engineering management will use discretion to provide engineering support at any time to support on call work.

Key Responsibilities by Group:

Product Development:

  • Design: Create new crane structures, overhaul of existing designs, and develop new hardware for novel functionality, all with intent to improve fleet operations or provide the most well-suited product to a customer. Able to understand abstract ideas, use and further develop existing processes, and visualize 3D concepts from 2D drawings and communications. Reverse engineering and redesign of critical
  • Testing: Assess and validate design using hand calculations, modeling, and prototyping to ensure that it fulfills all requirements and Conduct field testing: simulate environmental conditions, identify potential issues, gather feedback, and ensure that all expectations are met before full implementation of the equipment.

Aftermarket:

  • Rebuild Projects: Lead and manage the inspection, refurbishment, and rebuild of high tonnage cranes and associated machinery. This includes assessing equipment condition, planning and executing necessary repairs and upgrades, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards.
  • Technical Design Support: Work alongside manufacturing personnel to provide technical support to customers and internal teams regarding the performance and maintenance of our Diagnose and resolve technical issues, both remotely and on-site when required.

Production:

  • Catalog of Design: Work with Product Development team to implement iterative design changes to the equipment within the Cranemasters catalog of standard designs. Responsible for the governance of current and future Work with management and manufacturing team to coordinate releases based on internal and external demand on the production schedule.
  • Compliance and Delivery: Ensure that the crane build complies with standards and customer

Carries out all documentation and close out requirements for the build. Meet customer standards; maintain awareness and compliance of local, state, and federal standards. May be required to carry out

 

testing and physical handoff of the final build.

General:

  • Problem Solving: Systematically analyze, evaluate, and determine effective Use critical thinking and resourcefulness to make well informed decisions. As needed, collaborate with other engineers throughout the department, manufacturing team, and management to solve issues as they arise.
  • Ownership and Control of Design: Follow design through the manufacturing and testing phases to identify any issues or Adapt the design quickly and effectively when changes are required during the manufacturing and testing process.
  • Product Knowledge: Develop an in-depth understanding of Cranemasters' equipment and keep up to date with industry best practices. Stay current with product updates, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Customer Engagement: Maintain clear and effective communication with customers, addressing their inquiries and keeping them informed about the progress of their projects.
  • Quality Assurance: Collaborate with CPI manager and other foremen on relevant projects to ensure the highest quality standards are met during rebuilds and equipment Implement quality control measures and continually seek opportunities for improvement.
  • Communication: Open and continuous dialogue with team of other engineers, manufacturing team, and operations Gain understanding of the issues being addressed as well as provide structured explanations and rationale for proposed solutions. Identify and address constraints to the design as they occur.
  • Resilience: Able to respond and adapt to dynamic and unpredictable requirements based on the reactive nature of emergency derailment Must be able to make decisions during a high paced response with evolving timelines and unforeseen challenges.
  • Documentation: Adhere to the agreed upon guidelines set forth for revision control, release, and close Able to properly document all procedures and calculations done throughout the design process, record results, and present findings to key stakeholders if prompted to.
  • Time Management: use judgment to determine the best time management practices for day-to-day functions. Pay constant consideration to overall manufacturing timeline, needs of operations, and urgency of delivery date.

Required Travel:                                            Approximately 5 to 10%
