The Heavy Equipment Operator - Railroad Specialist is a critical role at Cranemasters, responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of equipment and materials to/from job sites. This position requires a high level of expertise in operating heavy motorized equipment, including backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, grapple trucks, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders.
Key Responsibilities
- Pre-Trip Inspections: Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment in accordance with Company policy and D.O.T. regulations.
- Safe Transportation: Drive tractor-trailer to/from job sites, inspect loads, and machinery being transported, verifying transportation permits to ensure accurate specifications for overweight and oversize loads/equipment.
- Job Site Participation: Upon arrival at job sites, participate in discussions related to the day's work plan to ensure safety/efficiency in carrying out daily work assignments, actively participating in daily safety briefings.
- Equipment Movement: Move, stage, load/unload materials/equipment in preparation for work activities, ensuring equipment/materials are reloaded for safe transportation and participating in site clean-up.
- Equipment Operations: Assist in assembly, inspection, and operation of cranes and other equipment, operating equipment in conformance with standard operational policies/procedures while following all safety rules/regulations.
- Task Accomplishment: Operate equipment (cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, etc.) to accomplish tasks associated with specialty lifting, re-railing, load transfer, track maintenance/repair, grading, or other work in preparation for railroad construction and related activities.
- Maintenance and Repair: Continuously monitor equipment/vehicles to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness, performing and documenting minor service on equipment/vehicles and referring more complicated mechanical issues to Shop Manager/Foreman for repair.
- Post-Job Activities: Participate in disassembly/loading of cranes and other equipment as necessary at the end of job assignments, restocking vehicles/equipment with necessary parts, components, supplies in preparation for future work, sorting scrap materials and placing them in designated locations.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: Be flexible/work-ready to perform tasks for other departments/divisions as may be required to meet business needs and customer expectations, following all required safety policies and procedures.
- Operational Experience: Three years of progressive experience operating heavy motorized equipment, including backhoe, bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader, grapple truck, rail-bound equipment, tractor, and skid-steer loaders.
- Certifications and Licenses: Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a good driving record.
- Communication and Teamwork: Capable of understanding and following directions, displaying strong adherence to safety policies and procedures, able to read, write, and speak English.
- Availability and Reliability: Must pass qualification tests as required, meet 24/7 availability to respond to emergency calls for service, including weekends and holidays.
