As a Jail Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of inmates within a correctional facility. Your primary responsibilities will involve maintaining order, monitoring inmate behavior, conducting security checks, and enforcing facility rules and regulations. This position requires a high level of professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle challenging situations with composure and sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Security and Safety: Maintain a secure and safe environment within the correctional facility by monitoring inmate activities, conducting regular inspections, and enforcing security protocols. This includes conducting thorough searches for contraband items, ensuring the proper use of restraints, and responding promptly to any security breaches or emergencies.

Inmate Supervision: Observe and monitor inmate behavior, conduct headcounts, and enforce facility rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline. Responsible for ensuring inmates follow daily routines, including meals, recreation, and visitation schedules, while addressing any violations or disruptions.

Report Writing: Accurately document incidents, observations, and daily activities in written reports, utilizing proper grammar and vocabulary. Maintain organized records.

Communication and Conflict Resolution: Interact professionally and respectfully with inmates, colleagues, and visitors, using effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. Utilize conflict resolution skills to de-escalate potentially volatile situations and address conflicts that may arise within the facility.

Emergency Response: Respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires, or natural disasters. Follow established procedures, provide assistance as needed, and coordinate with appropriate personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within the facility.

Training and Compliance: Participate in ongoing training programs to maintain proficiency in relevant policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Stay informed about changes in laws, regulations, and best practices related to corrections and detention facilities.

Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections of equipment, cells, and common areas to identify any potential safety hazards or maintenance needs. Report any issues promptly to the appropriate authorities for timely resolution.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (some jurisdictions may require additional education or training).
  • Must be at least 18 years old (age requirements may vary by jurisdiction).
  • Strong integrity and ethical conduct with a commitment to upholding professional standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to carry out the demands of the job, including standing, walking, and lifting heavy objects.

  • Able to pass a drug test
