Position Summary
The RN is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care in the OB GYN setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care plans. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient's clinical condition including: fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Provides newborn care and testing procedures per physician orders. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or responses to treatments.
General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
- Performs accurate and complete assessment of patients; initial admission assessment; coordinates and ensures completion of interdisciplinary screenings and assessments; assesses and reassesses pain; assessments are age, culture and psychosocial appropriate; assesses neonate at delivery.
- Formulates a plan of care based on patient needs, modifies the plan of care based on patient outcomes; formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning to include: educating the patient/family regarding treatment plan and providing discharge planning/instructions.
- Makes comprehensive nursing decisions based on the interpretation of facts and evaluation of patient outcomes; assists physicians with procedures; utilizes other departments to provide interdisciplinary care as appropriate; knowledgeable of fetal monitoring systems; identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately; utilizes pain management techniques; assists physicians with labor & delivery procedures, post partum and newborn nursery.
- Assesses the effectiveness of pain medications; revises plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment as appropriate.
- Ensures documentation is complete, accurate and timely; prepares the patient record in both electronic and chart form; prepares birth documents per regulatory statute.
- Performs all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; utilizes established hand-off communication protocols; maintains the security of the department.
- Answers patient call lights promptly and courteously; inquires about patient needs prior to leaving room. Observes and reports any changes in condition or behaviors exhibited by patients.
- Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- Associate’s in nursing required
Certification/Licensure Requirements
- Current IL RN License Required
- BLS Required
- NRP Required within 6 months
- STABLE Certification Required within 6 months
Experience Requirements
- Registered Nurse minimum 2 years Preferred
- Labor and Delivery / Newborn Nursery minimum 2 years Preferred
Computer Skills
- Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate EMR programs
