Title: Occupational Therapist

JOB SUMMARY: Occupational therapists provide screening, evaluation, education, planning, and therapeutic intervention to individuals identified with having disabilities that interfere with their ability to perform daily life activities or participate in necessary or desired activities. Professional judgment and clinical knowledge are used to develop individualized assessments and treatments based on deficits in the areas of personal care, process skills, social skills and graphic communication. For the Autistic Child or Adolescent, the Occupational Therapist will provide sensory therapy to decrease interfering symptoms inherent in Spectrum Disorders. Occupational therapist is expected to independently review outcomes, modify intervention programs and collaborate with other members of the treatment team, such as Psychiatrist, Behavioral Psychologist, Clinical Therapists, Special Education Teachers, and Speech Pathologists.
As a member of a healthcare team, education and instruction is provided to Mental Health Associates and other direct care providers to reinforce repetitive activities that are needed to reinforce the treatment process and accomplish desired goals.
Qualifications -
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Have successfully completed and graduated from an accredited occupational therapy professional program recognized by National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy, and have completed all fieldwork requirements.
EXPERIENCE: One year of experience in working with children and adolescent clients with Autism and special needs,
LICENSURE: Initial certification by National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy. Current license by the South Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy Valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Must submit a copy of DMV report in order to transport patients or operate a hospital vehicle.
PHYSICAL: Required standing and walking
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: An understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and related sensory processing and integration issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrates ability to develop and implement lesson plans for various age groups.
ENVIRONMENT: Well-lit, climate-controlled classrooms with accesses to phone. Noise level is moderate with intercom paging, phone ringing, office equipment and patient interactions.
RISK CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION: II
JOB HAZARDS: May be exposed to hazardous wastes found in clinical and non-clinical areas. There may be exposure to verbal and physical aggression and/or infectious conditions when patient contact is frequent.
WORK RELATIONSHIPS: (Including inter-and interdepartmental): Must be able to work well with clinical staff, department heads, physicians, therapists, caseworkers, parents/guardians and administrative staff. Contact with hospital visitors may be common.
