Position Overview:

Pre-Kindergarten teachers report to the ECE Director: Grades PK-1. This position provides rich, developmentally appropriate, learning experiences for mixed-aged classrooms of 3-5-year-olds. Pre-Kindergarten lead teachers, along with one assistant teacher, utilize a play-based approach to curriculum that includes arts integration and inclusion practices, to meet the learning needs of a diverse student body. Pre-Kindergarten teachers create a warm and responsive environment where they respect individuality and focus on the development of each child’s regulation and engagement, through both social-emotional learning and academic content. This is a school year exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing the daily classroom environment to ensure that it is organized, beautiful and inviting for all children;
  • Establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and assessments;
  • Developing lesson plans that draw content from CMI professional development in the areas of arts integration and child development to reinforce learning;
  • Using a variety of instructional materials, resources, and experiences to enrich learning;
  • Meeting the needs, interests, and abilities of all children, including those with disabilities and those who are English Language Learners (ELLs)
  • Regularly observing children, taking anecdotal notes, and collecting formative data to inform planning in the arrangement of small groups, classroom setup, integrations of children's interests in learning activities, and subsequent assessments;
  • Providing educational opportunities that reflect an understanding of children’s unique sensory and information processing profiles;
  • Using appropriate techniques and strategies that promote and enhance creative problem-solving, and evaluative thinking of children;
  • Working with families to support the progress of individual children;
  • Using effective, positive, respectful interpersonal communication skills;
  • Establishing positive relationships with colleagues, children, families, and the community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual;
  • Willingness or experience in incorporating instructional technology into practice;
  • Attending required professional development sessions;
  • Meeting and planning collaboratively at least weekly with a grade-level team;
  • Designing curriculum maps to sequence the teaching of content and standards;
  • Mentoring a Teaching Assistant (when applicable);
  • Developing a strong classroom culture through the Conscious Discipline model;
  • Completing progress reports for each child twice a year;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills;
  • An understanding of child development and experience working with 3-5 year old children
  • Prior experience with a play-based curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Ability to self-direct and prioritize among competing goals, exhibit flexibility, and drive results.
  • Adept at thinking strategically, translating plans into action, and exhibiting excellent judgment.
  • Commitment to the success of each and every child;

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Training in Google G - Suite for Education
  • Working knowledge of Teaching Strategies GOLD
  • Experience working with linguistically and ethnically diverse student populations and children with developmental differences
  • Possession of or eligibility for a valid District of Columbia Teaching Certificate or License (standard or provisional)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master's Degree in related field preferred)
  • 3 years of related experience preferred

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $62,463.00 - $83,284.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
