Summary
The Medical Billing Specialist performs complex clerical and accounting functions for patient billing, including verifying invoice information, maintaining third-party billing records, and resolving problems. Follows up on submitted and patient billing; resubmit claims or correct inaccuracies. May handle cash items and accounts receivable posting. Works with others in a team environment.
To succeed in this role, you must possess in-depth knowledge of billing software and medical insurance policies. The ideal candidate must also be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as communicating with clients and various insurance agents will form a large part of the job.
Essential Medical Billing Specialist Duties and Responsibilities:
- Preparing and submitting billing data and medical claims to insurance companies.
- Ensuring the patient’s medical information is accurate and up to date.
- Preparing bills and invoices, and documenting amounts due for medical procedures and services.
- Collecting and reviewing referrals and pre-authorizations.
- Monitoring and recording late payments.
- Following up on missed payments and resolving financial discrepancies.
- Examining patient bills for accuracy and requesting any missing information.
- Investigating and appealing denied claims.
- Helping patients develop patient payment plans.
- Maintaining billing software by updating rate change, cash spreadsheets, and current collection reports.
- Ensure payments by verifying the accuracy of insurance coding.
- Resolve disputed claims by gathering, verifying, and providing additional information, and following up on claims.
- Resolves discrepancies by examining and evaluating data; and selecting corrective steps.
- Prepares monthly reports of insurance billing by summarizing billings, adjustments, and revenues received.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; and keeping current on insurance billing and reimbursement procedures.
- Accomplishes billing department and Credent Care LLC mission by completing related results as needed.
Medical Biller Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, health care administration, accounting, or a relevant field.
- A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience as a medical biller, medical coder, or similar role.
- Knowledge if Procentive, Threap, MNITS, and other billing software.
- Solid understanding of billing software and electronic medical records.
- Must have the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Outstanding problem-solving and organizational abilities.
