Civil Designer – Job Description
The Civil Designer shall lead and support the design team as a civil designer on commercial development projects (including but not limited to residential multi-family, parks, industrial centers, parking areas, etc.). The Civil Designer shall collaborate with Engineers, Field Technicians, Administrators, Surveyors, Subconsultants, Municipal Staff, in addition to State and Federal Agencies. The role of the Civil Designer is to ensure civil designs serve the best interests of clients, communities, and the Florida environment.
As a Civil Designer, you will be responsible for researching state and local code and ensuring aspects of a project comply accordingly. The Civil Designer will be responsible for participating in meetings with, modify project designs for, and assist in the permitting process of local development committees, building departments, Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP)/ Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD)/South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)/Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)/U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE).
To succeed in this role, you should possess keen design and mental assessment skills and have strong critical thinking skills. You should also have well-rounded communication skills as well as be able to work comfortably in a flexible environment. The Civil Designer shall primarily report to the Business Operations Manager and other senior leadership as directed.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
· Studying surveys, maps, and plat data in the creation of preliminary conceptual design and master planning.
· Determining effective layer, xref, and file management methods and educating associate designers on best practices and procedures of CAD structures and civil design.
· Reading field reports, traffic studies, wetland delineation studies, and geotechnical data to identify actionable decisions for design.
· Utilizing Autodesk programs (ect.) for design of site plans, control structures, parking lots, and grades.
· Paying close attention to the scope of work and design impact on the potential cost of a project.
· Ensure designs comply with all state and local land development code, administrative code, regulation, and environmental best practices.
· Following all required municipal/agency rules and regulations.
· Adhering generally accepted design precautions and protocols.
· Taking a team role in project development and proactively answering questions from clients and municipal/state/agency staff.
Requirements
· High School Diploma required.
· Minimum 2 years of work experience as a Civil Designer or a related role in the engineering industry.
· Ability to follow safety rules and guidelines.
· Extensive knowledge of various programs used in the design office.
· Knowledge of the natural Florida environment and general water runoff behaviors.
· Excellent detail-oriented and hardworking individual.
· Relationships and familiarity with construction processes and permit procedures of municipal and regulatory agencies
· Understanding of construction materials and civil structures.
· Good time management skills.
· Ability to lift objects up to 30 lbs, twist, pull, push, and stand for lengths of time.
· Unafraid of geeks, computers, comic book trivia, gamers, history debates, one-liners, dad jokes, or other generally awesome folks.
