What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Creekside Veterinary Hospital & Referral Center?
The Veterinary Assistant plays a vital role in providing care for both inpatient and outpatient animals, working closely with technicians and veterinarians. In the exam room, the assistant is responsible for obtaining patient histories, monitoring vital signs, weighing animals, administering vaccines, collecting samples for diagnostic testing, and offering client education. They also assist with animal restraint during procedures and appointments. Additionally, assistants may help technicians with tasks such as nail trims, sample collection, surgery admissions, and discharge appointments. Their work directly impacts the efficiency of the veterinary team, the quality of client service, and the overall care of patients. Assistants also communicate with clients to provide follow-up care instructions and monitor patient progress. In addition, they are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the hospital, as well as providing daily care and feeding for hospitalized animals. Assistants are trained to recognize when a pet needs immediate medical attention and promptly notify the appropriate team members.
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s degree appreciated
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
- Experience in the veterinary industry and/or with animals (Preferred)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Effective communication with hospital team members and clients
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
- Type information for patient records and prescription labels into the computer
Physical Obligations:
- Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
- Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
