The Crenshaw County Sheriff's Office in Alabama is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the county's 14,000 residents. The department employs a team of trained deputies and staff who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of their community. This is general duty police work, serving legal processes, maintaining order, and providing for the care and security of prisoners at the Crenshaw County Dentition Facility.

ATTENTION:
THE STATE OF ALABAMA HAS ADDED A BASIC ABILITY TEST FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLICANTS, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2017.
The Basic Ability Test (BAT) is required of all applicants for admission to the Police Academy, except those applicants who have been previously APOSTC certified and who are required to complete the Refresher training for reinstatement of their Certification or those who possess an earned associate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or its regional equivalent.

NOTE: Possession of a valid ACT WorkKeys Assessment Certificate is not a requirement for submission of this Deputy Sheriff online application.
Individuals who do not possess a valid ACT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) may test at any Alabama Community College within the State. A list of Alabama Community Colleges can be found at www.apostc.state.al.us. Applicants may contact the community college nearest their location for scheduling, required fees, and other related information.
Out-of-state applicants may take the ACT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) in their home state provided proper documentation of a valid test result is made available upon request and is subject to the employing agency's approval.
SALARY RANGE
$15.00 TO $17.00/hour

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF APPLICANTS
Candidates must be able to establish they are of good character and reputation. In addition, candidates must meet all standards promulgated by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (see the APOSTC website at www.apostc.state.al.us for complete details).
Applicants meeting any of the following conditions will be rejected:
- Conviction of any felony, unless adjudicated as a youthful offender, or juvenile.
- Military discharge under other than honorable conditions.
- Any domestic violence conviction.
- Any person prohibited by state or federal law from owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
Applicants meeting any of the following conditions may be rejected:
- Usage or manufacture of illegal drugs within the previous year.
- Conviction of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the previous year.
- Under current charges, or on probation, for any offense other than minor traffic violations.
Additional notes related to education and the Basic Ability Test requirement:
- In addition to a valid high school diploma or a valid GED certificate, an applicant must complete and pass the Basic Ability Test (BAT) or possess an earned Associate's Degree or higher Degree from a College or University accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or its regional equivalent is acceptable.

The Basic Ability Test (BAT) requirement, background, and criminal history of all applicants will be checked by local law enforcement agencies and applicants are subject to disqualification based on those findings. Additional areas other than those indicated can result in disqualification based on a full evaluation of the information submitted. In addition, all applicants must meet State of Alabama requirements for fitness.
EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicant's responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, as in accordance with the APOSTC Administrative Code, and preferably some corrections or law enforcement experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence. Must be at least 21 years of age - no maximum age limit. May be required to have successfully completed the required minimum standards training necessary for recognition as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Some knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures as they apply to the protection of inmates who are institutionalized.

Description
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)
Enforces the laws of the County and all other pertinent local, state, and federal laws.
Patrols an assigned area in motorized equipment.
Checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions.
Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and make arrests of persons who violate laws.
Accompanies prisoners and mental patients to hospitals, jails, or court and appears in court as arresting officer.
Makes traffic arrests and gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws.
Aids motorists, attend fires, accidents, and disorders in assigned area as directed, restores order, renders all possible assistance, regulates traffic, and prepares necessary reports.
Watches for stolen cars and wanted or missing persons.
Operates radio patrol as required.
Makes investigations of traffic accidents.
Conducts investigations of serious crimes, preserves the scene of the crime, and interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
Follows up on leads and presents cases to District Attorney's Office.
Investigates felonies and misdemeanors and takes necessary corrective action.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Investigates and makes an arrest on narcotics violators.
Prepares and obtains search warrants.
Serves as a guard and escorts prisoners and mental patients to and from the court, hospitals, and doctor's offices.
Serves warrants, subpoenas and legal papers, and other legal process papers.
Takes fingerprints and photographs.
Develops fingerprints with powder and chemicals.
Develops crime prevention programs in the community and schools.
Performs related work as required.
Important Information
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class performs patrol work, conducts criminal investigations, receives, processes, and transports prisoners, and/or serves legal processes. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures under the general direction of a Sheriff's Sergeant or other superior. Supervision may be exercised over other employees as assigned.
