POSITION SUMMARY

The Polysomnographic Technologist performs standard procedures on patients being treated for sleep disorders. This includes preparing and observing patients for polysomnograms. They work under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and patient education. The Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for preparing patients for standard polysomnography to include MSLT and MWT testing in accordance with protocols. They will score their studies in a timely manner following AASM guidelines.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience :

Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology or RT with Sleep Disorder Specialist certification, successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and / or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician.

License / Certificates :

If RT licensed by the Board of Medical Practice (BMP) with the Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential or if they are a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) needs to be licensed through Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT). American Heart Association BLS within 30 days of hire.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform effective patient assessment by obtaining information from the patient and their medical record and determine appropriate recording procedures, methodology, and any special considerations

Provide age specific care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Explain all procedures to patient that pertain to the polysomnogram including providing an orientation to equipment used in testing.

Perform calibration procedures on polysomnogram equipment and inspect / maintain integrity of all equipment used in testing.

Prepare patients for standard polysomnography, MSLT and MWT testing in accordance with protocols. Provide patient education on sleep / arousal disorders ad CPAP.

Recognize and interpret clinical situations during the polysomnogram to determine appropriate recording parameters, make adjustments / changes / corrections to the study as needed.

Document all information completely and accurately.

Perform integration and titration of CPAP / BiLevel / Oxygen during Polysomnogram.

Maintain the laboratory to include keeping the equipment orderly, clean and in good repair, change bed linens as necessary, maintain adequate supplies and notify co-worker(s) if anything is low in supply.

Participate in on-going education in the technical and clinical aspects of Polysomnography through staff meetings, ins-services, and attendance at workshops.

Understand the benefit of CPAP therapy and use this knowledge to help the patient make an informed decision about their therapy.

Ability to troubleshoot CPAP equipment and if necessary, set a patient up for CPAP therapy.

Assure patient is continuously monitored with EEG, EKG, EMG, pulse oximetry, nasal pressure and airflow sensors, and respiratory effort belts.

Follow AASM clinical practice guidelines.

Perform polysomnography acquisition while monitoring study tracings are quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and adjust as needed.

Score studies in a timely manner while following AASM guidelines.

Manage and archive data.

Assist in maintaining lab accreditation.

Demonstrate Standards of Excellence when other duties are assigned.

The estimated starting pay range for this role is $68,454.00 to $80,659.00. Actual pay rate offered depends on many factors including each individual employee's experience level, preferred education / certifications, along with market conditions.
