Primary Purpose:
The Chief Mechanic is responsible for working with the Director, Assistant Director of Transportation, Operations Manager, and Technicians to insure both the scheduled maintenance and unscheduled repair operations run safely and smoothly, and vehicles are repaired to the standards of Crosby ISD, State, and Federal Regulations. The Chief Mechanic supervises all vehicle maintenance for the district and oversees vehicle safety training for all employees of Crosby ISD.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Maintain ASE Certifications (or be willing to obtain within 1 year) 2 years’ experience as a Lead Technician, Shop Foreman or Shop Supervisor
- Possess and maintain a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with a “P” endorsement) with an acceptable driving record as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- Possess and maintain TEA Texas School Bus Certification
- Must possess at least eight-(8) of the ASE Automotive Certifications A1-A8 or Medium/Heavy Duty truck equivalent. T1-T6 or S4, S5, S6 or S1-S7 School Bus certification preferred or TASBT Master Certification, or demonstrate proficiency in these areas
- Experience as Shop Supervisor preferred
- College Degree or Technical School Degree Preferred
Job Requirements:
- Must show negative on a drug and/or alcohol test to be given on a pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy.
- Must pass an annual physical in accordance with the law.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Experience as automotive and diesel technician
- Knowledge of Department of Transportation and environmental regulations.
- Personal computer and basic accounting skills preferred.
- Two years of maintenance management experience with 5 to 7 years’ hands-on experience in vehicle repair.
- Knowledge of the principles of leadership, management, and supervision.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform required repairs with no supervision
- Knowledge of Cummins Insite Pro, Bendix, ServiceMaxx, Diamond Logic, and Allison software
- Ability to perform mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections and tire repair on medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
- Clean Driving Record
- Able to operate a fork lift
- Ability to drive a school bus
- Able to pass a drug and alcohol test
- Good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Excellent Telephone and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety regulations, service manuals, and procedure manuals
- Ability to conduct a facility safety inspection
- Regular attendance required
Experience:
- Two years of maintenance management experience with 5 to 7 years’ hands-on experience in vehicle repair.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair:
- Provide supervision and guidance to all Technicians and shop personnel.
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs with no supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Work on projects assigned, following established procedures.
- Communicate with Director in all vehicle maintenance issues and areas.
- Provide training procedures for Maintenance Staff and hold maintenance training sessions for training opportunities.
- Develop liaisons with any appropriate maintenance related government agencies and staff.
- Be knowledgeable of all related federal, state, and local legislation in the maintenance area and update all related staff.
- Work with Bus Drivers and other district personnel in the diagnosis of vehicle problems, scheduling of the repair work needed, overseeing the necessary repairs, and communicating to vehicle operator when job is complete.
- Implement and oversee a preventive maintenance program for both the school bus and white fleets of the district.
- Ensure all safety recall and warranty repairs are performed in a timely manner.
- Assures that field trip buses are prepared in advance on the trip in conjunction the Operations Manager’s schedule.
- Implements and oversees a routine cleaning and sanitizing program of all district vehicles.
- Perform quality control checks on repairs and tracks productivity of technicians on come backs, time on task, duration of write-ups, etc.
- Lead an instruct technicians in the repair of vehicles in the shop.
- Assists with new employee orientation of the shop and shop procedures.
- Monitors all warranties and assures that all vehicles are repaired as required to ensure the validity of the warranty.
Inventory Management
- Assist the Director of Transportation on large purchases of shop equipment and help in the maintenance budget preparation.
- Advise on specifications for bus and vehicle purchases for all departments.
- Ensure an adequate supply of fleet repair parts, tires, fuel and other fluids, maintain emergency parts as needed, receive and stock parts as required.
- Daily posting of all parts movement in and out of inventory.
- Assists with the proper disposal of all old parts, equipment, tires, and any other waste materials.
- Assists in the effort to provide fleet consistency and standardization.
Safety:
- Assists with all vehicle accidents, photographs scene, coordinates student transport from scene, gathers all pertinent information at the scene, and completes and files insurance and accident reports.
- Assists with training the Transportation Staff on standard policies and procedures within the department including vehicle maintenance, safety, and other topics as required by the department.
- Maintains familiarity with changes in statutory laws and interprets the effects of safety and bus procedure mandates on Transportation operations.
- Assists in monitoring district compliance with laws, regulations, and/or rules related to Federal, State, or Local governmental agencies and other practical general industry guidelines with regard to transportation safety.
- Inspects tools and equipment for proper condition and usage.
Administrative:
- Participate in interviews for all technician candidates.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Communicates with the Operations Manager concerning department policies, procedures, and problems.
- Attends meetings as needed.
- Manage the use of the district’s fleet management software
- Collect, maintain, and manage data necessary to develop and produce fleet performance and operating cost indicators and information.
- Maintain fiscal responsibility in use of shop funds.
- Supports all district initiatives and models nondiscriminatory practices at all times.

Transportation Management Software
- Generate and finalize vehicle repair work orders.
- Operate and maintain the fleet maintenance software program to its maximum potential enhancing the departments’ operational efficiency.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Oversees the repair team in the Transportation Department Shop
- Maintain a safe working environment for all persons working in the mechanic shop.
- If necessary, receive emergency calls from drivers and arrange for mechanics to give immediate aid.
- Assign work orders to shop personnel fairly and based upon employee level of knowledge.
