Primary Purpose:

Work with defined group of students eligible to receive special education services (ages 14 ) to ensure transitional plans are developed and implemented.  Responsible for the vocational assessments, interviews, goal setting, defining coordinated set of activities, inter-agency connections, family support, and employment contacts within the community for this target group.  The specialist will also offer guidance and be a resource for families of younger students who are identified with low-incidence disabilities and have a higher need for earlier transitional considerations or interventions. 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor Degree

Valid Texas teaching certificate or other professional special education certification/license

Meet the requirements to be named a Transition & Employment Designee (TED) for the district

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Proven ability to work with students, parents, employers, agency representative, and peers

Demonstrate effective time management, communication, and organizational skills

Knowledge of curriculum design & implementation, vocational assessments, transition plans, and employment regulations

High level of integrity and commitment to job responsibilities

Ability to collect and interpret data and use results to improve skills acquisition for students

Thorough understanding of IDEA and transition planning for students with disabilities

Knowledge of community-based programs, school-to-work programs, and agency linkages

Ability to provide leadership and professional learning for teachers in transition-related issues

Possess a positive attitude

Ability to listen, communicates, and works well with a diversity of groups and individuals

 

Experience:

Three years special education teaching experience or other professional special education experience working in the field of transition

 

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Coordinate district activities to facilitate meaningful transition services for students with disabilities

Serve as the district representative on the Region IV ESC Transition Advisory Committee and the 18 Program.

Assist staff with administering appropriate vocational and transition assess meets.

Facilitate completion of IEP transition paperwork; including course of study, coordinated sets of activities, and post-secondary goals and transition and vocational assessment reports.

Attend ARD meetings as appropriate.

Coordinate with vocational personnel to plan integrated student career experiences

Act as a liaison between the campus(es) and relevant agencies that provide services to students with disabilities (The Harris Center, CRCG, Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Workforce Solutions, local colleges, etc.)

Provide transition information to parents & monitor consent process for parent/student to invite agency involvement

Oversee district vocational program.

Oversee and manage Work Based Learning (WBL) grant initiative.

Participate and conduct formative assessments at the campus level to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations,

including Indicators 13 and 14. 

Provide training to staff on transition elements and regulations

Collect baseline data and increase participation in student employment in the community

Collect data for Indicators as requested by the special education director

Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

Ability to provide supervision to our job coaches.

Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

Act as teacher of record/coordinator for 18 services and program.

Maintain confidentiality

Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.

Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Input on job coach at the high school and special education transition teacher at the middle school evaluations annually.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. Requires a current Texas Driver’s License.
