Senior Project Controls Specialist Nuclear Industry

Location : Hybrid (Onsite & Remote after 3-6 Months) | Schedule : Monday - Thursday (4x10s) | U.S. Citizenship Required

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Controls Specialist to support complex, large-scale projects in the commercial nuclear industry . This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing project schedules and cost controls for nuclear development projects. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in project planning, cost analysis, earned value management (EVM), and risk assessment for high-budget, multidisciplinary projects.

This position plays a critical role in project monitoring, risk mitigation, and accurate costing , ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with all regulatory and industry standards . The Project Controls Specialist will work closely with project managers, nuclear development teams, contractors, and key stakeholders to drive efficiency and optimize project performance.

Key Responsibilities

Project Scheduling & Cost Management

Develop & Maintain Project Schedules : Create Level 1-5 project implementation schedules using Primavera P6 , integrating cost estimates, resource allocation, and critical path analysis .

Cost & Resource Forecasting : Integrate project cost estimates with schedules to produce resource-loaded cost flow projections , ensuring accurate financial tracking .

Schedule & Cost Deviation Analysis : Identify and analyze schedule deviations that could impact project milestones, cost overruns, or schedule delays .

Performance Variance Reporting : Prepare detailed reports comparing baseline schedules to actual progress , including resource loading, cost trends, manpower projections, and impact assessments .

Project Risk Mitigation : Identify potential project risks, develop mitigation strategies , and provide recommendations for corrective actions to minimize cost and schedule overruns .

Estimate to Completion (ETC) & Budget Oversight : Work with Project Managers to refine cost forecasting and ensure predictable project performance .

Project Controls & Data Management

Project Data Entry & Analysis : Maintain accurate cost and schedule data in various project management systems , ensuring data integrity and proper configuration control.

Earned Value Management (EVM) : Apply EVM methodology to measure project performance and track cost / schedule trends.

Process Improvement & Compliance : Perform quality assurance reviews , identify areas for continuous improvement , and ensure compliance with industry best practices and project controls procedures .

Project Controls Governance : Ensure all project changes, cost adjustments, and schedule updates are accurately documented and reported to management.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Reporting

Cross-Functional Team Coordination : Work closely with Project Managers, nuclear development staff, engineers, finance teams, and contractors to collect project data and align schedules with project objectives.

Project Meetings & Leadership Support : Attend and contribute to project challenge sessions, approval meetings, risk management reviews, and project milestone discussions .

Executive-Level Reporting : Provide detailed project performance reports to senior leadership, ensuring transparent and data-driven decision-making.

Training & Mentorship : Support junior staff in developing project scheduling and cost management expertise .

Qualifications & Experience

Required :

Education & Experience :

  • Bachelors degree in engineering, construction management, project management, business, or a related field 8 years of experience in project controls / project management within an industrial environment .
  • Associates degree 9 years of experience in project controls / project management .
  • High School diploma / GED 11 years of experience in project controls / project management (in lieu of degree).
  • Formal training in Primavera P6 or a similar project management system is required .

Technical Skills :

  • Expertise in Primavera P6 for scheduling and resource allocation.
  • Proficiency in Earned Value Management (EVM) principles for cost / schedule tracking.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Experience managing cost estimates, budgets, and forecasting in an industrial setting .
  • Ability to analyze and mitigate project risks, ensuring adherence to project milestones .
  • Familiarity with industry regulations, including nuclear and industrial safety standards .
  • Preferred (Highly Desirable) :

    Industry Experience :

  • Nuclear power plant projects, renewable energy, or large-scale industrial construction .
  • Experience managing mega projects ($25M budgets) with complex, multi-disciplinary scopes .
  • Certifications :
  • Earned Value Management Certification via PMI ( PMP, PBA, SP, CAPM, or RMP ).
  • Software & Process Improvement :
  • Microsoft Power BI, Asset Suite, Workday Adaptive Planning, and Workday experience is a plus.
  • Experience leading process improvements and project reporting enhancements .
  • Accounting & Finance Knowledge :
  • General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting .

    Schedule : Monday - Thursday (4x10s) | No On-Call Requirement

    Location : Hybrid position (Onsite required for onboarding and periodic in-person meetings). Remote work available after 3-6 months , based on performance and team needs.
