Position: Registered Dental Assistant
Reports to: Dental Supervisor
Job Summary
The duties of a Registered Dental Assistant are performed chairside, in the dental lab, or in the dental front office. A typical Registered Dental Assistant should have basic knowledge of the basic body systems and functions, oral anatomy, dental science, dental materials, computer and office applications, and oral radiology. Registered Dental Assistants are required to carry RDA or CDA license obtained in the State of Texas.
Patient care responsibilities for Registered Dental Assistants
· Prepare patients for treatment. Retrieve patient's' dental records.
· Hand dental instruments, materials, and equipment to the dental provider.
· Use suction or similar devices to help keep patients' mouths dry and clear.
· Prepare tray setups for dental procedures.
· Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment.
· Prepare materials for making dental impressions and restorations.
· Offer patients instruction in postoperative steps and general oral healthcare.
· Expose radiographs and process dental X-rays as directed by a dentist.
· Other duties assigned by supervisor.
Laboratory Duties for Registered Dental Assistant
· Check on inventory including disposables every week.
· Check on sterilization protocols.
· Check on ultrasonic and autoclave functioning.
· Check on instruments and make sure instruments are properly sterilized and maintained.
· Maintain log of handpieces sent out for repair.
· Maintain sterilization log and present the log when requested.
· Make temporary crowns.
· Other duties assigned by supervisor.
Office Duties for Registered Dental Assistant
· Greet and receive patients.
· Maintain records such as consents, health histories of patients. Schedule and confirm patients' appointments.
· Other duties assigned by supervisor.
· In addition to the above duties dental assistants are expected to perform a variety of assignments and duties that have varied levels of responsibility during a typical day on the job.
DO's
· Show up at least 15 minutes before start time Mandatory.
· Check with the front desk before taking the patient to the dental chair.
· Check to see if the patient has signed the general consent.
· Do need to check on health history to see if they are current.
· Do make sure that consent for treatment is obtained after the exam, if you are busy let the checkout person know that consent needs to be obtained.
· Do need to run Texas prescription monitoring before printing prescriptions.
· Do send lab cases on the same day if possible.
DONT's
· Don't say anything to the patient or over promise unless you talk to the Dental Director.
· Don't let the patient leave without making a future appointment with check out desk.
· Don 't bring patients to the dental chair if there are other treatment patients.
· Do not make the patient ready without collecting payment.
· Do not make appointments for a patient if they have a balance unless prior balance is paid, or patient is willing to pay their past balances.
· Do not use private email or Gmail or yahoo mail to send patient documents or referrals. Use your crossroads family care email.
DOCUMENT PRESERVATION: Remember patient casts and other lab work need to be preserved for 5 years from date of service and therefore cannot be trashed All of them need to be stored and packed into boxes and old boxes need to be moved to the storage.
