What are the responsibilities and job description for the Choir Accompanist position at Crossroads United Methodist Church?
The principal function of the Accompanist is to provide pianist and/or organist accompanying during worship services as the Worship Director leads. This position will be salaried and account for approximately five hours per week for piano and organ skills, or four hours for piano only, mainly surrounding Sunday morning worship and rehearsals. There will be special services outside of that window throughout the year as well.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a playing proficiency in the piano. Proficiency in organ is preferred but not required.
- Proficiency includes but is not limited to ability to sight read, ability to follow a conductor, and ability to play an open SATB choral score.
- Accompany hymns and special music for each Sunday Service. (Approximately 10:00-11:00 AM)
- Accompany choir rehearsals each Sunday that take place immediately before the service (Approximately 9:00-10:00 AM)
- Pianist will be asked to play individual choral parts if needed.
- Select piano/organ pieces for the prelude each Sunday as well as for Communion on the first Sunday of each month.
- Communicate chosen pieces to the music director at least one week in advance.
- Work closely with the music director and pastor to ensure all music is prepared for each service.
- If unavailable to play for a service, communicate to the music director or pastor as soon as possible and provide a substitute player.
- If unable to find a substitute for the service, communicate that to the music director as soon as possible.
Lines of Accountability:
The Accompanist will report to the Worship Director for weekly leadership, and to the Pastor for the purpose of work evaluation and review at least once a year. This position is also accountable to the Leadership Board of CrossRoads United Methodist Church and has direct access to that committee when desired.
Accompanist (for both piano & organ) Compensation:
This is a salaried part time position with an assumed average of 5 hours of work a week: approximately two hours on Sunday and three hours of practice throughout the week for the weekly pieces. For the applicant with both piano and organ skills, pay is $75 a week, which would be a total salary of $3,900 per year.
Accompanist (piano only) Compensation:
This is a salaried part time position with an assumed average of 4 hours of work a week: approximately two hours on Sunday and two hours of practice throughout the week for the weekly pieces. For the applicant who has only piano skills and no organ skills, we are proposing $50 a week, which would be a total salary of $2,600 per year.
