What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jail Intern position at Crow Wing, County of (MN)?
The Correctional Officer Intern will work under the supervision of experienced correctional officers and staff to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of correctional facility operations. This internship provides an opportunity to learn about safety and security procedures, inmate supervision, crisis management, and rehabilitation efforts within a correctional setting.
- Shadowing: Observe and shadow experienced correctional officers during daily activities, including inmate supervision, facility inspections, and emergency response drills.
- Assist with operations: Assist in routine tasks such as inmate counts, cell searches, inmate searches, booking and releases, and facility patrols under the guidance of supervising officers.
- Documentation and Reporting: Learn to document incidents, activities, and inmate behavior accurately by assisting with report writing and record-keeping tasks.
- Interaction with Inmates: Gain experience in interacting with inmates in a professional and respectful manner, including communication rules and regulations, providing guidance, and addressing behavioral issues.
- Support Rehabilitation Efforts: Assist in organizing and facilitating educational programs, vocational training sessions, and counseling sessions aimed at promoting inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.
- Observation of Disciplinary Procedures: Observe disciplinary proceedings, hearings, and other administrative processes to understand how corrections personnel handle rule violations and maintain order within the facility.
- Collaboration with Staff: Work collaboratively with correctional officers, supervisors, and other staff members to support the smooth operation of the facility and ensure the safety and security of all individuals.
- Professional Development: Take initiative to learn and ask questions, seek feedback, and actively engage in opportunities for professional growth and development throughout the internship.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Currently enrolled in a degree program related to criminal justice, corrections, law enforcement, social work, or a related field (if applicable).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in corrections, law enforcement or social work, or a related field.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Pass a background check.
