Job Summary
Work with counseling department in a team approach with campus administration and staff to provide all students access to a quality developmentally appropriate and comprehensive counselor program focused on their academic and social/emotional well-being. These services are provided through the four program components-guidance, responsive services, individual planning and system support. Delivery of these services may be provided through individual, group, classroom or assembly activities as well as crisis prevention/intervention participation/facilitation, limited counseling and/or support group facilitation. Serve as support to at risk students.
Job Scope
This position has no supervision or budget responsibilities.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Master’s Degree in education or counseling
Teacher’s Certificate and Professional Counselor Certificate
Two years of experience as a classroom teacher, preferred
Essential Job Duties and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides responsive service assistance to individual students or small groups whose immediate concerns or problems put their academic, physical, emotional, social or behavior development at risk;
- Provides system support by working cooperatively to strengthen the efforts of administrators, teachers, staff, parents and community service agencies to resolve student concerns;
- Provides a guidance curriculum to help students develop basic life skills to their full potential through planning, organizing and teaching for group classroom and school wide guidance;
- Provides an individual planning system to guide students to develop and implement personalized plans;
- Interprets standardized tests results and other assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning;
- Maintains records of all student contacts and assures confidentiality of such records;
- Serves as a resource to families and school personnel for consultation and training;
- Attends workshops, training seminars, planning meetings and continuing education sessions;
- Provides limited counseling sessions as outlined by district guidelines;
- Provides support group sessions as needed;
- Is knowledgeable of academic requirements for student success;
- Adheres to ethical, legal, professional and district standards;
- Assists first responders and provides immediate assistance/aid in crisis situations on campus and throughout the district;
- Performs related duties as assigned.
School/Community Relations
- Serves as expert resource to faculty, staff, and administration in areas of intervention services, including mental health services;
- Demonstrates short-term interventions working with students, families, and staff;
- Makes home visits as needed to gather information relating to students;
- Is familiar with and provides outside referral resources as needed;
- Implements appropriate awareness and prevention programs and classroom presentations in collaboration with counselors and student support services personnel (i.e. Red Ribbon Week, Mental Health Awareness activities, SEL, etc.);
- Investigates referrals related to suicide outcries, GoGuardian alerts, Safe2Tell, and Well Check;
- Acts as a liaison for the district with parents and/or community agencies providing ongoing case management;
Crisis Support
- Provides intervention services in situations that are deemed a crisis or critical;
- Provides suicide risk prevention education to school staff, students and parents as required by state law in collaboration with Counseling Services;
- Serves as the campus lead for the trauma response team, coordinating crisis response on campus as well as responding to other campuses affected by a traumatic event;
- Maintains availability during extended hours as member of crisis/trauma response team;
- Conducts suicide, trauma, and violence risk assessments for students in collaboration with Principal and Assistant Principal;
- Facilitates emergency parent conferences and makes appropriate referrals;
- Coordinates referrals for social services that are in the purview of the campus;
Program Management
- Develops relationships with students and parents;
- Provides leadership in the organization, development, and delivery of programs and services to the student and parent/guardian that addresses issues related to emotional, social and behavioral needs;
- Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other required documentation and adheres to all confidentiality rules;
- Provides information, training, education and consultation services to schools and communities concerning intervention issue;
- Promotes an environment of cultural competency for all students, parents, staff, and community members;
- Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work and licensure ethics;
- Demonstrates high quality customer services; builds rapport/relationships with all stakeholders;
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in working effectively with others in a team relationship, individual counseling, crisis intervention, counseling techniques and ability to relate well to students, parents and school personnel. Knowledge of adolescent development and community resources. Ability to read, write and use computer technology.
