DEFINITION:
The Area Coordinator oversees the residence program in their assigned area, facilitating a meaningful residence life experience for students. Serving as an educator, mentor, and minister, they focus on bridging students’ academic and interpersonal development through discipleship, informal counseling, and community-building programs. Key responsibilities include training and supervising Resident Assistants, planning living area programming, and contributing to Student Development goals.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Dean of Students
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS: Resident Assistants and Assistant Area Coordinator
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
Works out of an office and lives on campus in a designated apartment. Equipment used includes, but is not limited to, personal computer and required programs, printer, fax machine, calculator, copy machines, and other equipment as the position requires.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
- Leadership of Staff - Supervise and develop student leaders in the effective fulfillment of their responsibilities.
- Participate in the selection of Resident Assistants.
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of RA Training.
- Conduct regularly scheduled individual and staff meetings.
- Organize one off-campus staff retreat per semester.
- Provide for the professional and personal development of staff.
- Understand and communicate rationale for Crown College regulations.
- Support and publicly reinforce Crown College regulations.
- Involvement with Students - Create an environment conducive to individual student growth.
- Create programming that reflects the values of Student Development.
- Establish visibility, availability, and approachability for residents.
- Confront, counsel, and take an active role in the student discipline process for low level policy violations.
- Utilize meal plan provided to periodically eat meals with students and/or faculty and staff.
- Serve as a student care point person for students in their living area to provide support to residents, including making appropriate referrals.
- Attend all major Residence Life events.
- Administration – Participate in the functions of the Residence Life program.
- Oversee the ongoing use and upkeep of all rooms within residence area during the academic year.
- Prepare the residence halls for the opening of the school year in partnership with the facilities team.
- Oversee a residence hall budget.
- Work with Housing regarding administrative functions as needed.
- Serve as part of the on-call staff, including over breaks.
- Close halls at the end of the year.
- Maintain regular posted office hours.
- Collaborate with other area to support the student experience.
- Residence Life Functions – the Area Coordinator team will divide the responsibilities of creating, implementing, and assessing the following Residence Life functions:
- Resident Assistant & Assistant Area Coordinator Training (August)
- Residence Life partnership with Welcome Week (August)
- Residence Life Assessment
- Management of Residence Life supervisory tools
- Resident Assistant selection (December-March)
- Housing closing procedures (December & May)
- Summer Residence Life Staff Selection
- Duty scheduling and oversight
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Candidates should exhibit leadership ability, helping skills, conflict resolution and organizational ability.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Mobility that allows on-going interaction with students
- Able to lift and carry loads of at least 25 pounds
- Able to sit and counsel/mentor students for at least 45 minutes per session
- Physically able to drive college vans
- Able to stay up late and still conduct office hours and meetings the next day
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Student leadership experience in a like-minded Christian college or university
- Experience within a related field or department
- Master’s degree in a related field
