Reports To: Lead Direct Care Staff

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hourly Wage: $21 - $22 an hour

Swing Shift (PM Shift)

Overnight Shift (Graveyard Shift)

Staff work weekends, Days off are during the week.

Summary

The Direct Care Staff at CPI is responsible for performing advanced indirect and selected direct client care duties in support of the clinical process in a competent manner under the direction of the Lead Direct Care Staff Member and Administrator for performing related clerical functions. The Direct Care Staff provides general oversite of the housing environment and reports all environmental needs as it relates to supporting clients, to the operations director.

“Direct service staff” shall mean employees whose duties include the treatment, training, care and/or supervision of the program's clients.

  • Age of Client Population Served: Adult (18 & older)

Population Served: Persons suffering from psychiatric disorders, outlined in the DSM5.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide overall support to the Lead Direct Care Staff and clients
  • Provide on-site assistance to Administrators at CPI office
  • Assist Administrators and Case Managers with client transportation to CPI office, outside appointments, and other recreational activities
  • Oversee client adherence to chore and meal planning schedule
  • Assist Lead Care Staff with facilitation of group sessions at home (i.e., Meditation group, Meal Planning, etc.)
  • Observe each client's behavior daily and issue infractions when necessary
  • Summarize each client's activities and behavior daily in Shift Report
  • Ensures that the environment of care adheres to safe care of the clients adhering to policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Appropriately documents clinical and administrative work.
  • Performs, monitors and documents vital signs. Attends facility/community meeting, searches belongings, collects unauthorized items to be placed in a secured area; conducts client rounds and perimeter checks every thirty minutes to ensure the safety of all clients.
  • Performs basic housekeeping duties during course of shift, including supporting clients in the life skills of, but not limited to, cleaning rooms and bathrooms (toilets, sinks, showers), cleaning microwaves, cleaning dirty utility rooms, doing laundry, sweeping and mopping floor, trash collection, making beds, etc.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as required. When required to transport clients:
  • Prior to transporting clients, ensure that there are no alert signals active (i.e., check engine light, TPMS system, etc.) and that tires are properly inflated in accordance with manufacturer standards.
  • Accompany and transport clients as assigned.
  • Arrives promptly and ensures clients prompt arrival for appointment.
  • Follows vehicle operation rules.
  • Practices defensive driving techniques.
  • Can verbalize protocol for transportation safety and for management of out-of-control behaviors.
  • Reports to Case Managers/Nursing concerns and/or issues related to clients' transportation.
  • Transport clients in company owned vehicles to various locations and outside appointments.
  • Must be 21 years of age or over, with a clean driving record

All direct care staff shall have graduated from high school or possess a GED and have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience, or its part-time equivalent, working in a program serving people with mental disabilities. Such experience must be in the direct provision of services to clients. If the employee does not have the required experience, the program shall document a specific plan of supervision and in-service training for the employee which will guarantee the ongoing qualification of the employee to perform the job. The plan should include but not be limited to the frequency and number of hours of training, the subjects to be covered, and a description of the supervision to be provided.

Requirements

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS Education, Training, and Experience Required:

  • A Highschool Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year experience working in a program serving persons with mental disabilities. Experience must be in the direct provision of services to clients
  • Attainment of at least 21 years of age
  • A Criminal Background Clearance per CDSS -- Health and Hu man Services Agency, Title 22, Division 6, Chapter 2 – Social Rehabilitation Facilities
  • A Health Screening with negative TB Test Results
  • Current Basic Life Support certification – First Aid
  • Current CPR certification
  • To transport clients: Must possess a valid, California driver's license and have a clear driving record

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of industry standards as related to the position of Direct Service Staff. Basic knowledge of PC software programs, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred.
  • Written and oral communication skills; must be able to concentrate on work amid distractions such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
  • Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile situations such as when verbally or physically confronted in an aggressive manner.
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision in an unstructured environment with multiple demands.
  • Must possess a reading and writing level that provides for clear expression and/or understanding of assignments related to job description.
  • Ability to represent the program well in interactions both inside and outside the facility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand or sit for extended periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The job requires frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning) and working with body fluid and hazardous chemicals. When under these working conditions, OSHA standards and universal precautions must be followed always. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal to high volumes of stress.
