Summary :

Stand watch to look for obstructions in path of vessel, measure water depth, turn wheel on bridge, or use emergency equipment as directed by captain, mate, or pilot.

Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear. Perform a variety of maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship and to maintain line and ship equipment.

Essential Functions :

  • Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM)
  • Work aboard watercraft, such as dredges, ferryboats, scows, and river boats.
  • Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
  • Sweep and wash decks.
  • Lower and man lifeboat in case of emergencies.
  • Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
  • Move controls or turn hand wheels to raise or lower passenger or vehicle landing ramps.
  • Insert blocks under wheels of vehicles to prevent them from moving.
  • Load or unload material from barges, scows, and dredges.
  • Paint lifeboats, decks, and superstructure of vessel.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment.
  • Splice and repair cables and ropes.
  • Examine cables that hold vessels in tow and tighten cables to ensure vessels are snug.

Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function and preferably can also perform other tasks satisfactorily.

Education and / or Experience :

Minimum :

  • At least 6 months of direct related experience and / or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Ordinary Seaman
  • Valid Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred :

Able Bodied Seaman (AB)

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email.
  • Knowledge of general machines and tools, which include : anchor lines, anchor rollers, depth gauges, hoists, marine signaling systems, and winches.
  • Skill in controlling operations of equipment or systems on the vessel.
  • Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations.
  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
