JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

Crystal seeks a temporary 1-year sabbatical replacement, part-time (0.5 FTE) Upper School Computer Science Teacher starting August 2025. The Upper School Computer science teacher is responsible for teaching students the theory and practice of computer programming, software development, networking, and other related topics. They are also responsible for helping their students develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. 

The US Computer Science teacher provides students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual development through general education. The US Computer Science teacher enables students to maximize their competencies and skills to function successfully in society, helps build equity and inclusion, and a sense of belonging, provides the foundation for positive self-assessment and emotional intelligence amongst students, and teaches a sense of responsibility as well as their academic curriculum. 

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of computer science teaching experience. This position includes advisor and chaperone duties, as well as required professional development and faculty and staff meeting commitments. This role may be expected to participate in the student retreats at the beginning of the school year, which may require an overnight. Other responsibilities include admissions and enrollment event duties, club sponsoring, study hall proctoring, and HR related trainings. Crystal is invested in its students as whole children, not just academic students. Thus, the role of a teacher extends beyond the classroom.

Qualifications


Essential Functions

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop innovative and meaningful curriculum and programming
  • Integrate technology in effective ways that enhance students’ learning experiences and growth
  • Actively work with the CADS Department Chair, and the Director of Teaching and Learning to participate in yearly growth plans and instructional support strategies 
  • Actively work with the Director of Academic Support regarding the needs of students of students with formal educational plans, and other students needing additional support 
  • Serve as an advisor who is committed to the social and emotional development of students
  • Bring unique skills to contribute to our multifaceted community outside of the classroom 
  • Engages in professional development and is committed to furthering 6-12 alignment across the department
  • Required to attend the start of year retreat; this is an overnight retreat for students by grade level
  • Attend New PAC orientation and PAC WEEK prior to the start of school for students, as well as participate in other mandatory school events

Required education and experience

  • At least three years of computer science  teaching experience in a school setting OR other relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university

Preferred education and experience

  • Master's degree
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience
  • Independent high school experience
  • Valid California teaching certificate
  • Experience as an advisor, coach, or club sponsor 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Able to work in a dynamic environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts  
  • Able to lift up to 20 pounds  
  • Able to climb stairs  
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods  

Travel Required

Light travel between the Middle School and Upper School campuses, as needed

Salary and Benefits

This is a temporary 1-year  sabbatical replacement, part time (0.5) FTE, Faculty position, and the annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $35,000 - $75,000. The first recruitment consideration period will be through January 30, 2025  and the second consideration period will end on February 14, 2025. The position  may close at any time a sufficient pool of highly qualified candidates has been established.  The ideal start date for this position is August 1, 2025.
