This Fiber Characterization Technician will perform tasks such as:
- Fiber characterization testing on long-haul and high-speed fiber optic networks, including OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) measurements and Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing
- Documenting and generating detailed test reports for engineering and project teams
- Troubleshooting and resolving network issues based on test findings
- Maintaining, calibrating, and ensuring proper functioning of fiber characterization equipment
- Collaborating with field teams, project managers, and clients to meet project requirements
- Adhering to safety standards, industry regulations, and best practices
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in fiber optic testing and characterization
- Proficiency in fiber characterization test equipment (EXFO, VIAVI, Anritsu, or similar platforms)
- Strong understanding of fiber optic principles, signal transmission, and long-haul network architecture
- Ability to interpret fiber test results, schematics, and engineering documentation
- Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting test results
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed for projects
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent certification
- CFOS/FC (Fiber Characterization Specialist) certification
- Experience with fiber optic splicing and termination
- Familiarity with industry standards related to fiber testing (TIA, IEC, ITU, or similar)
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate's degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, or related field preferred
