Vessel Manager/Captain

Location: Rhode Island

CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is a marine consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental, coastal, and oceanographic services in the U.S. and internationally and has done so since 1970. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the dual role of Port Manager and Vessel Captain. This position requires an experienced mariner with the ability to manage day-to-day operations related to vessel maintenance, safety and regulatory compliance, crew coordination, , to support operational planning, and to serve as vessel captain for projects. The candidate would ideally hold a 100-ton license (or greater) and have the experience of captaining any of the vessels in the CSA fleet, the largest being the RV Orca at 65’ and approximately 50-tons. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, organizational skills, a demonstrated ability work well with others, and have a high commitment to safety and professionalism.

Location: East Greenwich, Rhode Island

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

As Vessel Captain:

• Plan navigation and voyage strategies, considering weather, tides, and other operational factors.
• Safely operate up to an approximately 50-ton vessel in various conditions, ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, gear and vessel.
• Oversee compliance with USCG regulations, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
• Maintain accurate logs and reports, including voyage records, maintenance logs, and incident reports.
• Be willing and able to participate in remote field projects of various durations, usually 3-4 weeks maximum, including those not on CSA vessels.
  
  

As Vessel Manager:

• Conduct regular vessel inspections and maintain all equipment as fully operational.
• Oversee the maintenance, repair, and overall readiness of the vessel(s) under your responsibility.
• Coordinate and supervise crew schedules, training, and performance evaluations.
• Ensure compliance with all STCW requirements and USCG regulations, including licensing and certification of crew.
• Collaborate with company leadership on operational budgets, strategic planning, and resource allocation.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for homeport and operational marina(s), vendors, contractors, and regulatory agencies regarding vessel operations.

• Adhere to all company standards and procedures, including, but not limited to:
• Compliance with company’s Drug and Alcohol Policy (including pre-employment, annual, random, and for-cause drug and alcohol screening).
• Adherence to corporate Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental policies, protocols, and training.
• Assist with identifying opportunities to charter the vessel(s) and support proposal efforts that involve the vessel(s) (transit times, fuel burn and operational ports).
• Support outreach to operators of vessels of opportunity and contribute to maintaining CSA vessel of opportunity database.
• Other duties as assigned.
  
  

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Valid USCG 100-Ton Master License.
• STCW certifications, including Basic Safety Training and applicable endorsements.
• Valid US Passport and able to travel internationally.
• Proven experience captaining 50-ton vessels in a variety of conditions.
• Strong knowledge of maritime safety regulations, navigation, and vessel maintenance.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing operational needs.
• Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
• Familiarity with operations in Rhode Island and adjacent waters is preferred but not required.
  
  

Work Environment:

This position is based in Rhode Island and involves both on-water and onshore responsibilities. The candidate must be flexible to accommodate varying schedules, including occasional weekends, holidays, or extended voyages.
