Job description
CSNIP is a growing nonproft veterinary clinic dedicated to preventing pet overpopulation and increasing pet families' access to affordable veterinary care. Last year we served nearly 24,000 dogs and cats! We have just moved into a newly constructed and expanded clinic in the city of Walker. Be a part of our exciting future!
We are now seeking several part-time (20-30 hrs/wk) Veterinary Technicians/Assistants to join our growing team. If you love animals and want to work in the veterinary field, this may be the job for you. While previous work experience with animals is a great foundation to have, we do not require professional experience in a veterinary setting. CSNIP will provide structured on-the-job training for those hired. We provide a learning environment that offers unique opportunities to grow and expand your veterinary career skills. The starting pay range is $15-$17 per hour, based on experience and skills.
Training and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Shaving and scrubbing dog or cat patients for surgery
- Assisting the Veterinarians with wellness exams, administering vaccines, medical treatments, drawing blood, etc.
- Monitoring anesthesia and recovering patients
- Completing patient/medical paperwork promptly and accurately
- Cleaning/sterilizing exam rooms, surgical prep and OR area after each patient
- All other duties, as assigned by supervisors
Position Requirements:
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to work at a fast pace to maintain efficient patient/surgical flow.
- Ability to read basic animal body language and adjust handling techniques accordingly
- Ability to remain calm if there is a patient emergency and follow directions from a veterinarian
- Ability to multitask and remain focused
- Ability to communicate with the clients/pet owners in a friendly, professional manner.
- Must be able to cope with patient death due to surgical complications and/or euthanasia.
Physical Requirements
- Standing or on your feet for 9 or more hours
- With assistance, able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day
- Must be able to bend, kneel, and lift repeatedly throughout the day
- Must have good hearing, including the ability to distinguish changes in pitch
- Must have a reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations
- Must have good vision, including peripheral vision, attention to fine detail, distance, depth perception, and ability to focus
Preferred Skills/Experience
At least 1 year of paid work experience in an animal-related field. We will also consider related personal or volunteer work that shows your ability to work with dogs and cats. Ideal candidates should be enthusiastic about entering the veterinary field, compassionate, demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn, be efficient, detail-oriented, and possess a strong work ethic.
Work environment
The daily operations of a high quality, high volume veterinary clinic are fast-paced. We able to continue offering low cost veterinary services by maintaining our efficiency and team mindset. We are a learning environment and even serve as a rotation site for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students from Michigan State University. The CSNIP team is always teaching, training, and learning. This part-time position is scheduled for 20-30 hours per week, 2-3 days Monday - Friday. Because of the clinic environment, employees will be exposed to up to 150 dogs and cats per day and various chemicals, including but not limited to, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, cleaners, bleach, isoflurane gas, and isopropyl alcohol.
