Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program also provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income, first-generation families. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.  

Through the Summer Instructional Component participants are exposed to a real-life college experience during an intensive six-week summer program. Scholars will participate in college and career workshops, connect with professionals and community members, meet college admission officers, and prepare to undertake a rigorous course of study for the following 2025 – 2026 academic year. The goal for the Summer Instructional Component is to ensure each student is developing the essential skills to become analytical, self-sufficient, problem-solver, and critical thinker. The Summer Program Instructional Component will be conducted in-person at California State University, Fullerton. The primary role of the instructor will be to expose participants to academically rigorous and college preparatory coursework.

This is a 6-week teaching assignment beginning June 9, 2025 and ending July 18, 2025 from 8:00AM – 2:00PM. Hours range from 6 to 15 hours peer week. Assignment also includes a mandatory instructor orientation/planning meeting on May 31, 2025 and from June 2-3, 2025.

*Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period.   Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.

  • Develop and implement a creative hands-on curriculum focused on topics such as genetics, anatomy and/or physiology. The course is to be delivered to three separate classes over six weeks.
  • Prepare and submit lesson plans prior to instruction.
  • Assists participants and program staff to establish and maintain acceptable classroom behavior and standards.
  • Communicate regularly with Project Director and program staff to ensure the academic development of participants.
  • Assess and report on participants' progress by administering a pre and post assessment instrument(s).
  • Participate in paid mandatory curriculum development meetings (exact date and times to be determined).
  • Encourages an atmosphere that stimulates inquiry, self-expression and individual growth.
  • Facilitate active and collaborative learning for 20 – 23 students per class section, rising 9th –12th grades.
  • Facilitate 3 class sections on a block schedule of Monday/Wednesday.
  • Attend weekly staff meeting with Project Director and other instructors.
  • Additional responsibilities include: Submitting a course syllabus stating the goals and objectives of the class and the methods of attaining those goals at the Instructor Curriculum Meeting.  These goals should be aligned with the objectives of the Upward Bound Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Single Subject Teaching Credential in respective course subject area.
  • Experience teaching high school students.
  • Experience in the process of articulating student and instructional needs.
  • Ability to work in collaborative teaching environments and the ability to develop effective teaching strategies from these collaborative spaces.
  • Experience working with first generation and low-income students.

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-15 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
