In 1967, Professor John Irwin created Project Rebound as a way to matriculate people into San Francisco State University directly from the criminal justice system. The focus of Project Rebound quickly became Education as an alternative to incarceration and turning former prisoners into scholars. Since the program's inception, hundreds of formerly incarcerated people have obtained Bachelor's degrees and beyond. In 2016, Project Rebound moved beyond the confines of SF State onto eight other CSU campuses, including Cal State Fullerton. Project Rebound acts as a liaison between networks throughout the campus at large as well as throughout the communities in and around CSUF. We utilize a multitude of educational, tutorial, mentorship, and vocational resources to support formerly incarcerated students in succeeding in their education. We focus on the whole student and provide referrals to counseling and networking with human service programs and community-based organizations that can best serve our student's needs. From prison to university and beyond, Project Rebound exists to support those who want to empower themselves and others through higher education.
