CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.
Hill AFB is located between Ogden and Salt Lake City. The area is known for year-round activities, including skiing, hiking, boating, extreme sports, fishing and hunting, with four distinct seasons, low humidity and moderate snow fall in the valley. From Hobson House and the historic railroad shop on Hill AFB to archaeological sites on the UTTR, the Cultural Resources Program at Hill AFB manages resources on nearly one million acres of land in locations that span three states, including Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. The Air Force has a dual mission of maintaining national defense while protecting historic buildings, archaeological sites, artifacts, and other resources that are important to our national heritage as required by federal law.

Ideal for students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals. You’ll learn about federal land management while gaining real-world experience to advance your career in cultural resources. Guided by experienced Resource Managers and Specialists, you’ll engaging hands-on environmental management projects, developing practical skills, and enhancing your professional growth.
Paid, temporary positions are available with CSU CEMML at military installations across the United States and at CSUs main campus. These positions include internships, mentorships, and early career opportunities through CEMML’s ECDP. No military affiliation is required to apply.

The Cultural Resources Technician will support Hill Air Force Base’s (AFB) Cultural Resources Program with a combination of fieldwork and office tasks. The position will provide general support to the Cultural Resources Manager (CRM) by reviewing reports, drafting correspondence to consulting parties (State Historic Preservation Office [SHPO], Tribal parties, etc.), participating in survey projects on the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), and updating management planning documents, online cultural resource training modules, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The technician may also help develop: ESRI Story Maps, agreement documents, and other materials as needed. Required vehicle and safety training will be provided.
The technician may be required to work evenings and weekends but will not work over 40 hours in the workweek.

- Help prepare compliance documents in support of regulations (e.g National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA))
- Update and/or maintain cultural resource management documents
- Resource condition assessments and project/action impact analysis
- Site inspections and/or monitoring
- Spatial data collection, including post-processing, development, and/or standardization
- Survey 123, ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza Maps, or other data form development
The positions, duration, and the associated projects vary by location. Required Job Qualifications
- Must have an interest in pursuing a career in federal lands management.
- Must be physically capable of working independently in outdoor locations under varying weather conditions.
- Pursuing a B.S. in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field (at least a sophomore standing).
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date for operating federal vehicles.
- Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

- Experience photographing archaeological sites/properties or historic buildings and structures.
- Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data.
