The Arkansas Valley Research Center was established in 1888 as the Bent Agricultural Experiment Station and is the oldest continuously operated agricultural experiment station, outside of Fort Collins, in Colorado. The Center was established to serve the research needs of the irrigated farming area of southeast Colorado known as the Arkansas Valley, extending from Pueblo County on the west to the Kansas border. It also includes irrigated areas associated with the tributaries to the Arkansas River in El Paso, Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Agricultural production includes livestock and field and vegetable crops. Alfalfa, corn, dry beans, small grains, soybeans, sorghum, onions, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are representative of crops grown under irrigation. An Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is housed at the Center and administered by the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and serves Southern Colorado. The Otero County and Area Extension Office is also co-located at this facility. This Center is part of a network of 10 research centers (9 sites) throughout the state. Responsibilities include: Research field production and maintenance (i.e., planting, irrigation, and general research plot upkeep), experimental crop planning and harvesting, and general maintenance and repair of the facilities, grounds and equipment.

Position Minimum Qualifications
- Employees must be able to provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and prove their authorization to work.
- Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other machinery such as small engines, rototiller/weed eater, power tools and hand tools or the ability to learn.
- Demonstrated communication skills and ability to understand both verbal and written instructions (English).
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with or without direct supervision.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include: some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) on a frequent basis and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and handling.
- Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise.
- Ability to accommodate Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) and to meet seasonal demands as well as varied work hours extending in night and/or weekend.
- Experience working with large-scale irrigation systems.
- Experience in a research or compliance-oriented environment.
- Working knowledge of agriculture crops relevant to the AVRC.
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by start date.
