Work Unit | Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories
Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory processes over 120,000 accessions per year. The laboratory performs approximately 1,400 necropsies on a variety of domestic and exotic animals each year and evaluates over 30,000 histopathological slides for animal owners, veterinarians, and researchers.

The Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CSUVDL) in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking applicants for a veterinary pathologist position. This is an in-person position, working in Fort Collins. This is a full-time position, and the candidate will be scheduled for service on a daily basis, excluding time off for leave, professional development and other general duties. This position will be scheduled on both biopsy and necropsy service (rotating days). This position requires weekend work, typically 1-2 Saturdays per month.
Position Minimum Qualifications
A DVM or equivalent degree is required. American College of Veterinary Pathologists board certification or eligibility is required. Board eligible candidates will be expected to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of 1 year of experience in veterinary diagnostic pathology is preferred.

Essential Job Duties
Job Duty Category Veterinary Pathology Services Duty/Responsibility
This position will provide veterinary pathology services to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This will include biopsy and necropsy service. VDL clients include both internal and external submitters and a wide variety of sample types are submitted from all animal species. Total lab biopsy caseload exceeds 100 cases per day.
When on biopsy service, this position will be expected to read a minimum of 6 biopsy cases per hour (with exceptions for complex cases). Slides can be scanned into digital images for examination or physically reviewed. When on necropsy service, this position will be expected to handle the daily caseload (anywhere from 1-15 animals per day), with the help of anatomic pathology residents. During necropsy service, this position will be required to provide education to veterinary students on necropsy rotation.
Results interpretation will be submitted in the VDL laboratory information management system (LIMS) and pathologists are expected to provide case consults to clients, as appropriate. Results are expected to be accurate and timely. This position will be expected to meet all stated VDL turnaround times and provide exceptional customer service to VDL clients. This position will be required to return client contacts and consult with clients promptly, as needed.
Percentage Of Time 95 Job Duty Category Quality Assurance / Quality Control Duty/Responsibility
This position will be expected to participate in the VDL Quality Management System. Duties include reading and training on standard operating procedures, participating in audits and proficiency testing and completing quality control documents.
