The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Position Summary
A Wildlife Biologist position is available at Travis Air Force Base (AFB), California, with Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This is a field and office based position that will assist with the implementation of a variety of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) for the installation. This position will focus on wildlife surveys, construction monitoring, field data collection, and habitat analysis. The work location is at Travis AFB, Solano County, California.
Travis AFB is a United States Air Force Base under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command and is located three miles (5 km) east of the central business district of Fairfield, in Solano County, California, 50 miles northeast of San Francisco and 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. Travis AFB is situated on approximately 5,137 acres and is midway between the coastal zone and the interior valley of California. The primary ecological communities are northern claypan vernal pool and annual grassland, sometimes referred to as vernal pool grasslands.

Required Job Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:
- BA/BS in biology, environmental science, wildlife biology, natural resources management, or closely related field.
- A minimum of three years post degree work experience in the areas mentioned above (may include up to two years of graduate school experience).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience writing and reviewing survey memos and technical reports.
- Experience with the flora and fauna of central/northern California or nearby areas.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA, Sikes Act, etc.).
- Experience performing field data collection.
- Experience working with/coordination with federal/state agencies.
- Experience conducting wildlife surveys.
- Ability to write consultation documents that evaluate impacts.
- Experience with ArcPro, including map composition, data analysis, and preparation of metadata files.
- Possess a valid driver’s license my position start date.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date
- Hold or be able to obtain a special status species survey permit for California tiger salamander, vernal pool fairy shrimp, and/or vernal pool tadpole shrimp.
- Experience with construction monitoring to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA, Sikes Act, etc.).
- Background in at least one area for the following: herpetology, invertebrate zoology, entomology, mammalogy, and/or bat survey work.
- Knowledge of and experience with military Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans (INRMP).
- Familiar with vernal pools and fairy shrimp.
- Knowledge and experience with range/grazing management.
Preferred Qualifications Include
- MA/MS in biology, environmental science, wildlife biology, natural resources management, or closely related field.
- Experience working on military lands and military conservation experience.
- Knowledge of or experience with military Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans.
- Experience monitoring construction sites for compliance with environmental regulations.
- Experience verifying and delineating wetlands using USACE data sheets.
- Experience preparing ESA section 7 consultations for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service.
- Experience preparing/supporting/executing Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans on installations.
- Experience writing permits and Endangered Species Act documents (e.g., evaluations to determine if an activity will affect/not affect a federally listed species).
Job Duty Category Field Work and Data Management Duty/Responsibility
- Execute wildlife surveys and other field inventories based on expertise.
- Implement and develop survey protocols specific to the base.
- Execute site surveys at construction sites for compliance monitoring and review proposed project sites for natural resources impacts.
- Execute projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan.
- Use field data collection technology including GPS units and field tablets.
- Perform data management and analysis. Perform data QA/QC checks. Implement data management protocols to ensure data quality and data storage.
- Manage, analyze, and report on collected data following scientific documentation guidelines
- Write stormwater and natural resources inspection reports
- Review reports, work plans and other documents
- Write and contribute to reports and other deliverables
- Create maps for environmental reports and personnel.
- Download and manage data.
- Use GIS to analyze spatial data.
- Perform dig/work permit review.
- Develop ESA documents.
