The Connecticut Black and Brown Student Union (CT BBSU) is a youth-centered organization committed to building power with Black and Brown youth to challenge repressive school policies and practices. We envision a future where students experience just and liberatory schooling, free from the violence, policing, and surveillance that disproportionately harm Black and Brown communities. Through organizing and deepening connections among youth, we aim to shift policies and create safe, equitable school spaces for all.
Position Overview:
The Regional Organizer will play a pivotal role in expanding CT BBSU's reach by focusing on the day-to-day operations of organizing efforts, with a special emphasis on Central Connecticut and the development of Black and Brown Student Union (BBSU) chapters in high schools. They will work closely with the Organizing Director to create and sustain BBSU high school chapters throughout Central Connecticut while also managing partnerships with other students' groups and organizations in major cities. This position requires strong community organizing and relationship-building skills, as it involves direct work with youth, schools, and community allies to build CT BBSU’s membership base and deepen engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
- BBSU Chapter Development and Implementation:
- Establish and launch two new BBSU high school chapters in year one by collaborating closely with high school administrations across the Central CT/Hartford region.
- Implement the BBSU Leadership Ladder to develop the skills of chapter members, fostering their growth as youth leaders and organizers who can actively participate in legislative campaigns and advocate within their schools and communities.
- Facilitate the implementation of the BBSU chapter curriculum and materials to provide youth members with political education and equip them with essential organizing and campaign skills.
- Continuously update and develop engaging materials to support relationships with school administrators, as well as high school chapters and external partnerships.
- Implement a summer plan that includes chapter evaluations, member-staff one-on-one meetings, and summer events designed to create opportunities for relationship building and member retention.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for schools and community organizations, ensuring ongoing communication and collaboration to strengthen partnerships.
- Recruit New Affiliates and Sustain Existing Affiliates:
- Recruit six new affiliates (already existing groups of organized young people) from the Central CT/Hartford region into BBSU membership during Year 1.
- Sustain engagement of new and existing affiliates by encouraging active participation in all BBSU activities, particularly legislative campaigns.
- Build and nurture strong relationships with current and potential members, volunteers, community partners, and stakeholders, fostering a sense of connection and value within CT BBSU.
- Organize and participate in events, workshops, and community gatherings to strengthen relationships, raise awareness, and promote CT BBSU's campaigns and organizing initiatives.
- Day-to-Day Legislative Campaign Support:
- Assist the Organizing Director in managing day-to-day operations of CT BBSU's campaigns, especially the Re-imagining School Safety campaign, which seeks to address repressive school discipline policies.
- Assist the Organizing Director in coordinating logistics for campaign events, meetings, and workshops, ensuring that all activities run smoothly and effectively.
- Support the Organizing Director in the development of campaign materials and strategies to ensure that young leaders are prepared and empowered to lead organizing efforts.
- Data Management and Analysis:
- Collect, track, and analyze data related to member engagement and retention, chapter activities, and campaign impact to inform future strategies and outreach efforts.
- Prepare reports on membership growth, engagement metrics, and outreach efforts for leadership and stakeholders.
Required Skills and Experience:
- 4 years of experience in youth organizing, advocacy, or community engagement, with a focus on working with Black and Brown youth.
- Proven experience in membership management, community outreach, and relationship-building.
- Strong understanding of school-based organizing, youth leadership development, and the challenges faced by Black and Brown youth.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to connect with diverse communities and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in digital tools for organizing and outreach, including social media platforms and peer-to-peer texting systems.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously.
- Commitment to social justice, racial equity, and creating inclusive, supportive environments for young people.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Lived experience with the criminal justice or education system.
- Familiarity with transformative justice, trauma-informed care, and intergenerational organizing.
- Experience working in Central Connecticut or familiarity with local school and community issues.
The Regional Organizer will be essential in ensuring the success of CT BBSU’s outreach, membership, and day-to-day organizing efforts, particularly in Central Connecticut. They will work closely with youth members to help build their capacity and will play a vital role in shaping the future of Black and Brown youth organizing across the state.
