Job Description:
SUMMARY
The GIS Administrator is responsible for managing all aspects of the Tribes’ Geographic Information System including data collection and maintenance, quality control, software administration, geospatial analysis, cartography, training and technical support for GIS users. This position will provide GIS services and support for planning, forest management, cultural resources, emergency management, and other departments.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages, maintains, and updates the Tribes’ geospatial data.
- Produces high-quality cartographic products in print and digital formats.
- QA/QC geospatial data including metadata documentation.
- Develops map templates for use by other departments and staff.
- Provides GIS-related training and support to staff.
- Performs spatial and statistical analysis to inform planning and management decisions.
- Creates statistical summaries, tables, charts, and reports for inclusion in tribal documents.
- Develops and updates GIS coverages using a variety of tools including aerial photo interpretation, GPS units, LiDAR, and UAV’s.
- Maintains software, licenses, and hardware associated with the Tribes’ GIS.
- Evaluates and incorporates new GIS innovations and related hardware/software.
- Attends meetings with internal staff as well as outside agencies, and provide input on GIS and other topics.
- Collaborates effectively with team members, contributing to a positive and productive work environment while supporting shared goals and objectives.
- Interacts with Tribal members and the public in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner.
- Other duties as directed by management.
LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS:
- Exercises a limited range of supervisory duties for contractors and consultants.
- May supervise seasonal field staff and interns.
- Incumbent must display a high degree of initiative in carrying out duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT:
- The majority of activities and responsibilities will be carried out in the office, though there may be occasional opportunities to assist with fieldwork, such as GPS data collections, on an as-needed basis.
- The noise level in the office environment is usually moderately quiet.
- Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
- May require limited field work in remote forested locations. Field work may be subject to extreme weather conditions, noisy conditions (shouting necessary to communicate), reduced air quality (fumes, odors, dust, smoke, and chemicals), and encounters with wild animals and insects. Field work may occasionally be in close proximity to large machinery (bulldozers, excavators, yarders, log loaders, etc.).
- May occasionally require extended or abnormal work hours to meet deadlines; to perform field work; and to attend events, meetings, conferences, workshops, trainings, etc.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
- Must be willing and able to work long hours, which may include evenings and weekends.
- Must be willing and able to travel both locally and within the CTCLUSI service delivery area.
- Limited field work may require the ability to traverse steep slopes and difficult ground conditions for extended periods of time, to drive vehicles with either standard or automatic transmissions for up to 6 hours or more per day.
- Limited field work may require the physical ability to work outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions, to work around loud and constant noise continuously, and to tolerate required personal protective equipment such as safety/fire boots, work gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, safety vests, face shields and hard hats.
- Limited field work may require the ability to walk, hike, and drive in difficult conditions at various hours and days of the week.
