The Field onsite Controls Engineer focuses on designing-development and maintenance of on-site automation systems including, but not limited to, conveyors, PLCs, industrial robots, machine vision systems etc. This role will work with all functional aspects of the control solution including hardware devices, I/O communication, coding, and UI development as well as debugging, troubleshooting and operational support. Must have knowledge of PLC, IO & Fieldbus, and core automation principles.
This role will initially report into Automation Dept. during the initial engineering phase; and participate in controls engineering as well as PLC programming. Once the implementation is complete, he/she then will be primarily responsible for ensuring up-time of automation systems, supervising maintenance procedures and tasks, support operations through activities such as calibrations, optimizations, continuous improvement.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement code for controlling electro-mechanical systems.
- Select and integrate I/O and other fieldbus devices.
- Test and debug source code.
- Primarily responsible for ensuring all automation systems are operational and performing to meet required throughput and performance.
- Provide support and troubleshooting, resolve any issues and minimize downtime.
- Work closely with Automation engineering on post-implementation modifications as necessary.
- Assist with maintaining and optimizing code for existing electrical & control systems.
- Follow best practices for software version control and documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer or electrical engineering, or a comparable technical degree
- 3 years of either ST (Structured Test) OR C#/C experience with an emphasis on PLC or motion controllers programming. Ladder Logic, Raspberry Pi, Arduino are all plus skills, but ST and/or Embedded C/C /C# are necessary.
- Experience with machine-control APIs.
- Familiarity developing machine controls for complex systems.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
General Skills/Qualifications
- Understanding of current Automation in distribution
- Ability to use Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
