What are the responsibilities and job description for the Petrographer II position at CTL Group?
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform petrographic examination of concrete (ASTM C856) and aggregate for concrete (ASTM C295). Examine specimens to gather compositional, conditional or quality-related data from construction related materials through the use of stereomicroscope, polarized-light microscope, reflected-light microscope, or scanning electron microscope;
- Perform air-void system analysis of concrete materials (ASTM C457). Interpret observations of data examined through microscope;
- Perform point-count analysis of rocks, minerals, concrete and other construction materials through the use of various microscopes;
- Prepare reports and proposals, as directed by project manager;
- Conduct searches for vendors, equipment, papers and publications in scientific journals;
- Plan and schedule testing and prepare samples under the guidance of senior staff;
- Develop and sustain cooperative business relationships with colleagues;
- Assist in developing leads with current and potential clients, communicate leads to management and assist with the client follow-up as directed by manager;
- Demonstrate awareness of employee safety by performing duties in accordance with company and OSHA guidelines;
- Maintains high ethical standards by using sound judgment that benefits both CTLGroup and its clients.
Required Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in geology, material science, civil engineering, or related scientific field;
- Minimum 3 to 6 years of concrete petrographer experience;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Experienced with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Advanced degree;
- Experience with scanning electron microscopy.
Physical and Travel Demands:
- Work is performed in an office/laboratory environment with exposure to prolonged sitting, standing and use of computer;
- Prolonged use of microscopes where leaning, close vision and ability to visibly detect physical changes in material is required (focus and concentration);
- Required to lift, carry, push, pull, move and twist with up to10 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally;
- Must be able to use a hammer to crush concrete samples;
- Ability to climb stairs (2 stories) or use heavy freight elevator daily and walk short distances up to 30 feet frequently;
- Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever necessary;
- Up to 25% travel may be required.
