What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ontologist position at CUBRC INC?
The CUBRC, Inc. Buffalo NY office has an immediate need for an Ontologist to work on state-of-the-art research and development projects. The successful candidate will join an established team of ontologists and software engineers in creating and maintaining ontologies and knowledge graphs that deliver data analysis capabilities to our customers. As a member of the team, the successful candidate will perform requirements collections, domain analysis, ontology development, testing, and data alignment under the direction of a Principal or Senior Ontologist. Additional responsibilities will include documentation, customer education, and training.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master's degree with a focus in Applied Ontology (Philosophy, Computer Science, Library Science, or related disciplines).
- 2 years of experience using W3C and semantic web standards and technologies, such as RDF, OWL, SPARQL, and SHACL.
- Experience using top-level ontologies, especially the Basic Formal Ontology.
- Demonstrated ability in domain analysis, knowledge representation, logical reasoning, and complex modeling tasks.
- Experience working with customers developing ontology requirements regarding content, structure, and performance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to summarize and present work to audiences of varying levels of expertise.
- Self-driven and a team player with the ability to work on multiple projects with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Working experience with ontology editors (especially Protégé) and graph databases.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Common Core Ontologies and methodology, OBO Foundry methodology, git versioning, software development practices, data normalization, ETL procedures, data integration processes and tools, entity resolution, referent tracking, data workflow tools, or data analysis tools.
- Desire to develop innovative applications of ontologies and semantic technologies to enable end-user needs.
- Experience integrating multiple disparate data sets into a common vocabulary and writing effective queries for use in a production environment.
- Experience with high-level coding languages or scripting/interpreted languages, such as Java, JavaScript, and Python.
- Familiarity with Agile software development processes and tools (to include JIRA and Gitlab).

- U.S. Citizenship is required for employment.
- Continued employment will require that the successful candidate obtain and continuously maintain a US Department of Defense and/or Department of Homeland Security security clearance.
