Job Description Summary
The English as a Second Language Department at Cuesta College welcomes applications for a full-time, temporary one-year position starting in August 2025. The teaching load will consist of face-to-face classes on the North County Campus in Paso Robles. Classes are primarily scheduled in the evenings, but there may be a combination of day and evening classes assigned. The faculty position includes divisional responsibilities such as program review, student learning outcome assessment, curriculum development, faculty evaluations, and service on college-wide committees. The successful candidate will be committed to collaborating with faculty, classified staff, administration, students, and community partners. The candidate will demonstrate proficiency in current ESL pedagogical approaches and have experience supporting individuals from varying backgrounds. The candidate will provide accessible, inclusive, and equitable instruction to multilingual adult ESL learners.
Cuesta's ESL program, which is part of the Student Development and Success Division, provides language development opportunities for students of all English language proficiency levels in the community. The program is committed to helping students improve their English language skills so that they may achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals as well as participate more effectively in their communities. The program offers six levels of integrated skills courses ranging from literacy to advanced, as well as three levels of conversation, two levels of grammar, and two levels of vocational English classes. ESL classes are held at the South County Center in Arroyo Grande, the main campus in San Luis Obispo, the North County Center in Paso Robles, and several community sites across the county. The department receives a federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant which regularly assesses students as a requirement of the grant and annually reports benchmarks. Selected applicants will be invited to give a teaching demonstration, and an interview on Thursday, May 15, 2025 on the Paso Robles Campus.
First Interviews will be held in person or via Zoom by candidate request. In person interviews are preferred and, in the interest of equity, candidates will be reimbursed up to $500 toward their travel expenses if they choose to interview on campus. Virtual teaching demonstrations will be evaluated using the same criteria as in-person demonstrations and will be expected to facilitate similar levels of effectiveness, skill, engagement and interaction.
Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

To be considered for the English as a Second Language (ESL) discipline:
Required:
- Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis from an accredited institution;
- Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate from an accredited institution AND master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language from an accredited institution;
- The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. For directions on what is an acceptable equivalency argument please review the requirements listed on the HR Website or see further information on Equivalency Petition Process Information below.)
- A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).
- Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students;
- Ability to engage and motivate a diverse student population, which (in addition to the above) includes a variety of ages; academic and ethnic backgrounds; and educational abilities.
- Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;
- Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges;
- Evidence of an ongoing commitment to professional development in the field of ESL;
- Knowledge of and experience in creating ESL curriculum and materials;
- Experience teaching all levels of ESL, including multilevel classes using a variety of delivery methods;
- Experience with WIOA-related assessments such as CASAS testing and experience in developing curriculum and materials for EL Civics assessments;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
