What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Events Director position at Cullman Parks, Recreation, & Sports Tourism?
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma/GED required. College degree in event management, hospitality management, or a closely related field preferred. Must have at least three years of experience in planning and executing large-scale special events. Experience with vendor management, budget administration, and event logistics required. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must meet Park Board employment and physical standards, which includes a background check as well as drug and alcohol screening.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Cullman Parks, Recreation, & Sports Tourism is dedicated to improving quality of life through exceptional parks, facilities, events, and recreational opportunities for all.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates, develops, and manages recreation programs in areas of sports, arts, outdoors, Pre-K, adults, youth, Therapeutics, summer camps, and others.
- Conducts research on trending recreational programs and community feedback to create a full service of recreation programs that offer something for everyone in the community.
- Oversees program leads, instructors, staff, and volunteers in all recreation programs.
- Creates schedules, calendars, lesson plans, and so forth for all recreation programs.
- Creates programming plan for the entire department to include plans for program expansion, diversification of offerings, and long-term needs for programs.
- Evaluates all recreational programs by conducting post-program surveys.
- Evaluates all program staff, gives instruction and support for future growth.
- Purchases supplies, inventory, uniforms, and equipment for all recreation programs.
- Sends out necessary communications to program participants.
- Develops and determines fee schedules for all recreation programs under the direction of the Executive Director and with the approval of the Board.
- Ensures safety of program participants and liability protection through waivers.
- Creates and maintains a budget for all recreation programs.
- Serves as staff lead in coordinating city-wide events and festivals through the department.
- Oversees event staff and volunteers, assigning jobs and duties as needed.
- Creates and manages budgets for all special events offered in the department.
- Communicates with department supervisors and city department heads on needs for events.
- Assists with and leads any new developments or special projects for the department as assigned.
- Attends all meetings as requested by the Executive Director.
- Acts as a team member with other Parks and Recreation staff, embracing and supporting the vision and mission of the CPRST Board of Directors and the City of Cullman.
- Maintains sound business and financial procedures in accordance with Federal and State laws, and CPRST system policies.
- Exhibits a high level of professionalism and ethics, working amicably with the Park Board, the Executive Director, Administrators, Personnel, and Community.
- Exhibits proficiency in written and oral communication.
- Works a minimum of a forty-hour work week, which will likely include nights and weekends, with hours varying based on time of year, events, and projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Position will often require sitting at a desk as well as serving as director at events in indoor and outdoor settings. Work is performed in the office doing regular office tasks as well as at events. Position involves set-up, tear down, and operations of events.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to occasionally lift up to fifty pounds as well as sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time. Job could include the operation of equipment and/or machinery.
