Billing Specialist
General Summary
Follows patient accounts through the entire billing process from eligibility to completion of the payment process. Provides medical billing and collection processes by verifying eligibility and benefits, obtaining pre-authorizations, entering medical codes, requesting payments and resolving account issues
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Postsecondary education preferred.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates integrity and personal accountability.
- Significant medical billing experience and one year coding experience using ICD-10 or equivalency required. Thorough knowledge of the entire billing process, demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
Essential Job Functions
- Contacts patients and insurance companies for payment requests, overdue payments, denied claims and arranges payment plans.
- Enters medical codes from patient charts for visits and procedures and ensures compliance and correct coding practices.
- Contacts insurance companies for explanation of benefits, pre-authorizations and to resolve claim issues.
- Produces reports to reduce age trial balances by contact the patient for collection or sending secondary claims.
- Provides customer service to patients by educating them on insurance policies, billing procedures and coding issues.
- Negotiates payment settlements with patients or insurance companies.
- Authorizes patient discounts within the policy and procedure guidelines.
- Calls patients and insurance companies to follow up with account information.
- May provide training to others on billing procedures and practices.
- All other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing/sitting for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
