POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE
Cultural Youth Development Specialist—Native Language and Cultural Program
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in the preferably Social Work or Education, plus two years relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Arizona State Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
- Bilingual English and Navajo speaker required.
- Knowledge of the Navajo culture and history and ability to share with staff, students, and parents.
- Knowledge of the social, educational, cultural, and economic development and needs of Navajo students and demonstrated the ability to provide culturally sensitive and appropriate services to the students and their families.
- Experience in youth development and youth services with proven ability to engage youth and motivate them toward action and follow-up.
- Knowledge of homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, and domestic violence.
- Knowledge of basic counseling skills and the ability to identify priorities based on present student need and effectively move the student to a service to meet their needs.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively communicate service updates, outputs and outcomes, data and evaluation findings, and reporting requirements.
- Must be a positive role model by practicing excellent work and personal ethics.

Navajo Language and Cultural Program Coordinator
JOB GOAL
To provide cultural youth services to students to attain a strong self-awareness to ensure the cultural, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of students and their families.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Facilitates land-based activities both at the school and in the community or outdoors.
- Provides meaningful family engagement activities and cultural activities interventions.
- Educates youth in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills utilizing the Navajo Language and culture curriculum.
- Assists youth explore opportunities in community service activities such as volunteering at various locations.
- Mentors youth on completing daily living skills such as caring for personal health, managing money and scholarship, taking care of personal needs, preparing food, caring for clothing, shopping, maintaining a living space and managing time.
- Coordinates cultural and/or academic youth activities that encourage group participation as well as collaboration and positive communication with other individuals and groups.
- Provides training for various Native American culturally relevant activities, crafts, and projects.
- Coordinates, manages and implements a Mock Interview Program that would give youths the skills necessary to participate in interviews utilizing the Navajo Language and culture curriculum program material that incorporates: Gaining valuable experience in how to be successful and confident during an interview; learning the interview process by preparing actual experience and skills towards the position; receiving feedback on improving interviewing skills.
- Maintains records concerning student services and ensures the confidentiality of the student.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ninety (90) day probationary period of employment when initially hired. Ten (10) months a year 204 days thereafter at Grade 1 on the Initial Support Staff Exempt Salary Schedule. This position is exempt. The Governing Board will establish salary and work year.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
