BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher/coordinator in the placement, testing, orientation, and tutoring of students; assist in the preparation of materials and provide routine clerical support. SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Provide instructional support to students as determined by the supervising teacher.
  • Assist assigned supervisor/teacher/coordinator in administering and scoring placement tests to determine the level for incoming students.
  • Assist assigned supervisor/teacher/coordinator in providing orientation to students.
  • Assist assigned supervisor/teacher/coordinator in administering a variety of tests including: paper-based, computer-based and oral tests.
  • Assist assigned teacher/coordinator in managing student work assignments including: accepting completed assignments; correcting assignments, returning corrected assignments; and giving out new assignments.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of program activities such as making copies, preparing packets, labeling, data input, duplicating and filing.
  • Use various computer software programs that require entering and looking up information.
  • Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment such as copiers, paper cutters, laminators, and computers.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; clean, set up, and set out instructional materials.
  • Monitor inventory levels of supplies; order and receive supplies as directed.
  • Attend assigned meetings, conferences and in-services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school, plus complete two years of study at an institution of higher education (college level) or forty-eight (48) semester units, including a math and an English class or obtain an Associate’s degree or higher*; good general background and work experience, including one year of paid or volunteer experience working with school-age children desired.  Knowledge of: Basic subjects taught in schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading; basic instructional methods and techniques; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; operation of standard office and classroom equipment; oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; basic record-keeping techniques.  Ability to: Work independently with minimal supervision; understand and follow oral and written directions, office procedures, and testing protocols consistently and carefully; multi-task in a busy and sometimes noisy environment; welcome and assist students from a wide range of educational and cultural backgrounds; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain records and files.   WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment: Classroom and playground environment. Physical Requirements: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file and retrieve materials; seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities; hearing and speaking to exchange information.
