Job Summary
To cover the duties of School Custodians who are absent from work.
Under supervision, to maintain an assigned school facility or group of buildings and adjacent grounds and office space in a neat, clean, orderly, safe and secure condition. To assist in the maintenance of the physical environment required for the activities held at the school and to perform other related work as required.
Job Description / Essential Elements :
SUMMARY OF DUTIES :

- Perform cleaning duties for assigned rooms and other areas;
- Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; spot clean and shampoo carpets;
- Clean classrooms, cafeterias, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty and clean waste receptacles;
- Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows; unclog drains and toilets;
- Sweep concrete surfaces immediately adjacent to school buildings;
- Replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; clean chalkboards, white boards and erasers;
- Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; inspect buildings and grounds to ensure against safety hazards and for security purposes; set alarms as appropriate;
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment for special events or meetings;
- Assist school personnel with heavy objects;
- Perform minor maintenance tasks to keep assigned area safe and operating;
- Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods;
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education and experience :
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; one year of experience involving the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.
Knowledge of :
Methods, materials and equipment used in cleaning a variety of surfaces and furniture; safe working methods and procedures.
Ability to :
Maintain a predetermined work schedule; perform moderately heavy manual activities; efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies and equipment; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
WORKING CONDITIONS : Environment :
Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
Physical Demands :
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of custodial equipment; hearing and speaking to exchange information; walking or standing for extended periods of time; seeing to perform custodial duties; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects as assigned by position; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; climbing ladders and working from heights to replace light bulbs.
Hazards :
Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals; working on ladders.
