Incumbent serves as Library Assistant for the Culver-Union Township Public Library (CUTPL), responsible for performing circulation desk functions and providing customer service assistance in support of library programs and services.
:
Opens and closes library to the public following established library procedures.
Performs the full range of circulation desk procedures using the Evergreen Indiana Integrated Library System. Checks out and renews library materials for patrons, assists patrons with locating materials and catalog searches, and makes recommendations based on patrons' needs and interests.
Processes incoming library materials, including scanning barcodes, checking items for damage, and cleaning audio/visual material and book covers as appropriate.
Assists patrons with library card applications, issues new and replacement cards, and inputs/updates patron records.
Places holds on items for patrons as requested and contacts patrons when needed for expiring holds.
Receives and resolves routine complaints and answers a variety of questions at the circulation desk.
Collects fees/fines and payments for other library service. Reconciles cash drawer at open/close of business day.
Re-shelves books, audio/visual, and periodicals. Prepares and shelves new magazines and pulls older issues for discard per Technical Services department.
Empties book drop on a continual basis.
Answers telephones and provides routine information or refers and/or transfers calls. Retrieves and responds to overnight messages.
Schedules conference rooms by request, and logs on both hardcopy and electronic calendars. Prepares and posts signs regarding room usage/availability on a regular basis.
Answers and keeps count of reference questions.
Devises and conducts programs for adults 18 and older.
Assists at Youth Services Department desk as needed.
Provides outreach services through CUTPL Homebound Program. Assists Adult Services Manager in identifying outreach possibilities and needs.
Performs related duties as assigned.
1. :
High school diploma or GED.
Commitment to public service and the ability to portray a positive image of the library, work well with a diverse patronage, and promote library programs and services during customer interactions.
Proficiency in using computers and related software; experience with library management system software preferred, including cataloging systems and public interface systems, online searching, and social media.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare written correspondence and reports.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, Technical Services, Youth Services, Information Technology (IT), and the general public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and people of varying abilities.
Ability to comply with all employer policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records and information.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with unruly/difficult patrons.
Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, telephone, copier, and fax machine.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate decimals and percentages.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and as part of a team, often amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
Ability to establish priorities and accomplish multiple tasks in a limited time.
Ability to apply knowledge of people, layout assigned work projects, and manage time and resources effectively.
Ability to work days, evenings, and/or weekends as scheduled.
11. :
Incumbent performs duties according to a formal schedule with priorities primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual or unprecedented matters. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision and has moderate flexibility in the job. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well established policies and procedures. Work is reviewed primarily for attainment of objectives and adherence to instructions/guidelines. Errors in incumbent's work are primarily detected or prevented through procedural safeguards. Undetected errors could result in inconvenience to other agencies or the public.
m. :
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers and the general public for purposes of exchanging information, rendering service, and maintaining cooperative work relationships.
Incumbent reports directly to AduIt Services Manager.
IV. :
Incumbent performs duties in a public library and at a service counter, involving sitting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying books/equipment weighing less than 25 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, keyboarding, bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, stooping, speaking clearly, hearing, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent maintains everyday contact with the general public and may be exposed to difficult patrons. Incumbent works day, evening, and/or weekend hours as scheduled.
