General Description: The Instructional Paraprofessional - SPED is responsible for assisting the Special Education Department/Teachers as needed. The Instructional Paraprofessional – SPED may work with individual and/or small groups of students to provide support. The Instructional Paraprofessional – SPED will assist in supervision, safety, instructional support, and evaluation of classroom and student activities as a collaborative team member under the direction of the Teacher/Special Education Supervisor and/or Administration. The Instructional Paraprofessional – SPED will work within board policies and state laws to assist in the development of each child to their fullest potential.

Duties and Responsibilities
· Assists the teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program in a manner consistent with a student’s Individual Educational Plan.
· Provides individualized and small group instruction to meet the educational, physical and emotional needs of each student.
· Works cooperatively with regular education teaching staff to monitor each pupil and provides support instruction in the regular classroom or resource center as assigned.
· Assists and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning, including following acceptable rules of behaviors.
· Helps students with behavioral challenges to successfully participate in classroom, social and home activities.
· Engages child in various forms of oral communication to encourage language development.
· Observes and documents children’s interest and progress, and relays that information to appropriate staff.
· Consults with SPED Supervisor regarding each pupil's educational program, academic program and personal growth.
· Checks note-books and Supervises testing, make-up work, independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as assigned.
· Assists students with various projects, crafts, and curriculum tasks.
· Implements developmentally appropriate activities based on children’s interests and needs under the direction of the teacher, SPED Supervisor, and Principal.
· Serves as a resource for information and help to any teachers or substitute teacher assigned in the classroom.
· Assists with the supervision of students during non-instructional times; i.e., drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
· Performs clerical duties related to the instructional program, including, but not limited to, copies and anecdotal notes.
· Assists in taking care of the physical and emotional needs of the special education student.
· Aids physically handicapped students, particularly those who rely upon appliances, prosthetics or assistive technologies.
· Assists SPED teacher with completing student documentation during weekly meetings.
· Promote the attainment of students’ educational goals and learning objectives by providing supplemental service which assist the student(s) and teacher(s) in delivering, modifying and adapting materials and access for the student(s) assigned.
· Assists in delivering services required by the IEP.
· Participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.
· Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities (at least 20 hours per school year).
· The ability to effectively utilize available technologies.
· Take adequate measures to insure the health, safety, and welfare of students.
· Develop a working relationship with all members of the staff and other personnel assigned to the school.
· Maintains confidentiality in accordance with district policy and handbook. Handles sensitive and confidential information, documents, communications, incidents, etc., with discretion and in a conscientious manner.
· Be willing to participate in activities that increase one’s professional development.
· Keep informed about school policies and procedures.
· Maintain and update school records as required.
· Be punctual and maintain regular attendance at school and at prescribed meetings.
· Complete all required paperwork and responsibilities in a timely manner adhering to all directives and timelines.
· Maintain ethical and professional behavior in working with school personnel and other agencies.
· Assumes other related responsibilities and duties within the context of employment and certification as may be directed by school administration, central office, or the Board of Trustees.

Salary/Schedule: Salary is $32,000 annually. This is a full-time, 10-month contract position.
Education/Experience:
High School Diploma, required
Associate’s Degree or sixty (60) credit completion in education or related field, preferred.
One (1) year educational/teaching experience, preferred
Passing the ParaPro Assessment, preferred
Substitute certification, preferred
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with New Jersey State law and the provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of certified staff.
