Peer Support Specialist

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is an individual who is in stable recovery and able to use their personal, lived experiences in recovery to guide, support, and advocate for recipients during their own recovery process. The Peer Support Specialist supports the recovery needs of recipients while being part of a multi-functioning team that works interdependently with other departments in the organization. The Peer Support Specialist serves as a connection between recipients and recovery support available to them by engaging them in all points of recovery to teach and model the skills necessary to achieve long term recovery.
Essential Functions:
· Engage recipients in all points of recovery to teach and model the skills necessary to support long-term recovery.
· Work with treatment teams to enhance recipient’s motivation to engage with appropriate treatment services through motivational enhancement strategies and sharing of personal recovery journey; assist with referrals and link recipients to alternative levels of care when needed; and/or assist the recipient with obtaining and maintaining SUD services within the organization.
· Work with recipients to develop a Person-Centered Recovery Plan which will identify the recipient’s strengths, challenges, supports, and recovery needs and communicate the plan with the recipient’s providers. The plan will serve as a collaborative tool for implementation of services to overcome psychosocial needs.
· Ensure the recipient is involved in developing recovery goals and a plan to develop the skills, strengths, support, and resources to be successful in their recovery journey.
· Provide reminders pertaining to SUD treatment (ie. Pill counts, drug screenings, appointments, etc.) and assist with identifying and overcoming barriers that could cause conflicts in the recipient’s recovery plan. PSS must promote personal accountability of the patient while working closely with all care team members.
· Identify and provide recipients with community recovery support meetings that are offered in the area and promote regular active attendance. PSS will provide transportation and attend meetings to model positive behaviors for the recipient as needed.
· Serve as a liaison and communicate regularly with all treatment team members.
· Maintain accurate documentation on all cases per program guidelines and use it to assist clients in evaluating their progress.
· Meet twice monthly with their individual supervisor as required by state regulations.
Basic Qualifications:
· Be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
· Have a valid Kentucky driver’s license, car insurance and reliable transportation.
· Have a current or past diagnosis of mental health, substance use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
· Demonstrate a pattern of recovery from mental health, substance use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
· Must have been in stable recovery in the community for at least a period of 1 year.
- Must have completed requirements to become a Kentucky Certified Peer Support Specialist and be in good standing.
Education:
· Have a High School Diploma or GED.
Additional Requirements:
· Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
· Provide transportation to recipients as needed.
· Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and approach tasks and recipient encounters in a creative and energetic manner.
· Demonstrate the ability to be a self-starter and have strong initiative.
