The Mental Health Therapist provides individual and group services to address co-occurring mental health disorders and the intersection of those disorders with substance use disorders to enhance the recovery efforts of patients seeking treatment at Cumberland Heights. Operating within the Cumberland Heights Model of Care, this position works closely with clinical treatment teams to provide a seamless service experience for the patient. The Mental Health Therapist reports to the Director of Family and Inpatient Clinical Support.

The Mental Health Therapist provides individual and group services to address co-occurring mental health disorders and the intersection of those disorders with substance use disorders to enhance the recovery efforts of patients seeking treatment at Cumberland Heights. The Mental Health Therapist reports to the Director of Family and Inpatient Clinical Support.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Maintains caseload of patients and/or families as assigned and coordinates their care.
- Collaborates with the patient and medical and clinical treatment providers to assess and diagnoses co-occurring mental health disorders, including trauma sequalae, acting within the scope of education, experience, and licensure.
- Collaborates with the patient clinical treatment team, particularly with the primary counselor and case manager by providing input, feedback, and recommendations for the individualized plan of care to address the areas identified, including ongoing continuing care and community support.
- Facilitates individual and group therapy as assigned within scope of practice defined by education, experience, and licensure, including, but not limited to cognitive behavioral therapy, 12 Step dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma resilience and Som-Ex ™ based therapies, EMDR, brain spotting, etc.
- Documents clinical activities in electronic medical record, according to established policies and procedures.
- Consults with clinical treatment teams, participating in team meetings, treatment plan review, and clinical supervision as needed.
- Intervenes in crises to deescalate situation and resolve crises, using events as entries into therapeutic process for patient.
- Facilitates internal trainings related to common co-occurring disorders, including trauma, with a wide variety of interdisciplinary staff members and departments as needed.
- Represents Cumberland Heights at outside professional meetings as needed, including presentations as assigned.
- Creates a welcoming, safe and healing environment that is maintained for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
- Recommend ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
- Ensure proper handling and distribution of company funds.
- Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
- Reacts productively to change.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree in professional counseling, social work, or related field required; LCSW, LPC-MSHP or equivalency required.
- Minimum of five (5) years behavioral healthcare experience preferred with a minimum of two (2) years post-licensure experience working with trauma and common co-occurring disorders required; one (1) year of experience must include working with patients with substance use disorders.
- Ability to effectively use cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies, as well as training in trauma related modalities such as EMDR, brain spotting, Som-Ex ™, Trauma Resilience Model preferred and/or willingness ability to train and then practice these modalities.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to quickly learn EMR system and use various clinical software.
- Ability to skillfully adapt to changing circumstances and departmental needs in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to interact with co-workers and multidisciplinary teams in a collaborative and courteous manner.
- Ability to deescalate a person in crisis in a calm and supportive manner; work calmly and professionally in stressful situations and ally with people in crisis
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language
- Ability to actively listen and maintain a therapeutic environment using a variety of behavior management skills
- Knowledge of and ability to apply information regarding age/cultural/population specific characteristics to patient care.
- If recovering, two years of verifiable abstinence required with five years of verifiable abstinence preferred; active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.
- Position is in an office setting that involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions.
- Position requires frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
- May perform HWC and/or CPR/First Aid as needed (being certified or eligible is required)
- Position may be subject to weekend work and travel on occasion.
- Ability to lift up to 20lbs and/or push pull up to 40lbs; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
